  • Patent number: 4631652
Abstract: The primary winding of a high leakage inductance power tranformer is coupled to a source of unregulated voltage and to a square wave voltage generator that includes first and second alternately conducting output switching transistors. A voltage controlled oscillator establishes the operating frequency of the voltage generator. A resonating capacitor is coupled to a transformer secondary winding that is loosely coupled with the primary winding. The capacitor forms a series tuned circuit with the leakage inductance between the primary and secondary windings of the transformer. The operating point of the tuned circuit voltage verses frequency characteristic curve determines the amplitude of the generally sinusoidal output voltage across the secondary winding, in accordance with the operating frequency of the square wave voltage generator. A feedback circuit senses the amplitude of the output voltage and varies the frequency of the voltage controlled oscillator to regulate the output voltage.

  • Patent number: 4471271
Abstract: A self-regulating, saturating core power supply for a television receiver includes a magnetizable core having first, second and third core sections. A primary winding is wound around the first core section and an output secondary winding is wound around the second core section. The third core section provides a magnetic circuit path for magnetic flux lines that link both windings. The primary winding is coupled to a source of alternating input voltage for developing an alternating polarity output voltage across the secondary winding. A resonating capacitor is coupled to the secondary winding for generating a current therein that aids in producing substantial magnetic saturation of the third core section twice during each cycle of the alternating polarity output voltage to thereby regulate the output voltage. The second core section remains substantially unsaturated during the entirety of each cycle.

  • Patent number: 4424469
Abstract: A ferroresonant power supply having a relatively temperature stable output voltage includes a saturating magnetic element having a magnetizable core and a winding located thereon. A magnetizing current is developed in the winding by a high frequency source of alternating input voltage for generating an alternating magnetic flux in the magnetizable core that links the winding so as to develop an alternating polarity output voltage. A capacitor develops a circulating current that generates a magnetic flux in a core section associated with the winding that aids in magnetically saturating the core section to provide regulation of the alternating polarity output voltage by means of ferroresonant action. In order to temperature stabilize the output voltage, the magnetically saturating core section of the magnetic element is formed of a ferrospinel comprising a lithium ferrite or a substituted lithium ferrite.

  • Patent number: 4390819
Abstract: A high voltage ultor power supply for a television receiver includes a ferroresonant transformer that is capable of operating over a substantial range of temperature without thereby introducing undesirably large changes in the ultor voltage. The ferroresonant transformer comprises a plurality of windings, a magnetizable core with first and second core sections, and a resonating capacitor. A first of the plurality of windings is wound on the first core section and coupled to a source of exciting current for generating magnetic flux in the core. A second of the plurality of windings is wound on the second core section. The varying magnetic flux that links the second winding generates an alternating polarity output voltage across that winding. To regulate the output voltage, the capacitor is coupled to one of the plurality of windings and develops a circulating current to produce a magnetic flux that aids in magnetically saturating the second core section.

  • Patent number: 4319167
Abstract: A high frequency ferroresonant transformer is driven by a high frequency power source coupled to a drive winding of the ferroresonant transformer. Around saturating portions of the core are wound a low voltage winding for providing a B+ scanning voltage and a high voltage winding for providing an ultor voltage. Tuning of the ferroresonant transformer for regulating the B+ and ultor voltages may be provided by the high voltage winding distributed capacitance, for example, or by a discrete capacitor coupled across a winding associated with the saturating portions of the core, for example.

  • Patent number: 4262245
Abstract: A ferroresonant transformer includes a drive winding wound around a thin strip of magnetic material and coupled to a high frequency voltage source. The drive winding is resonated with a capacitance for saturating the core portion of the strip under the drive winding. A load winding, separated from the drive winding sufficiently to provide substantial magnetic decoupling, via air, for example, is resonated with a capacitance to saturate the core portion of the strip under the load winding for providing a regulated output voltage across the load winding.
