Patent number: 6169740Abstract: Novel traffic management schemes of a telecommunications network using the concept of virtual links is disclosed. As an example, if a switch connects via a high bandwidth link to an access mux that drives lower bandwidth links. The mux is a potential congestion point in the downstream direction (from high to low bandwidth links) because traffic can arrive at a greater rate over the high bandwidth link than it can exit through the lower bandwidth link. If all of the traffic destined for a particular low bandwidth link can be organized into a unique virtual link. This virtual link can be scheduled at a maximum rate not exceeding the bandwidth of the low bandwidth link, thus preventing the mux from ever becoming a congestion point. Therefore, the amount of mux buffering can be reduced to a very small amount (for jitter absorption). One advantage of this scheme in this example is potentially large cost reductions in the high volume access mux at the lesser expense of a more complex low volume switch.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1997Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Todd Douglas Morris, Norman Allan Lyon, David Anthony Fisher, Alan Frank Graves

Patent number: 6169693Abstract: An erase method provides for self-converging erase on a flash memory cell by rapidly switching a bias on a control gate while a lateral field is present in a channel region. Preferably, the lateral field is provided by differentially biasing the source and drain of the cell and the change in bias of the control gate is sufficiently fast to induce a transient response at the floating gate. The net transient vertical field formed across a tunneling oxide between the channel region and the floating gate causes moderate hot carrier injection between the channel region and the floating gate. This method is self-converging, since carrier injection to the floating gate will not happen unless a sufficient number of carriers are removed from the floating gate during the array step. Since the bulk of the self-converging effect occurs as the control gate voltage is transitioning and shortly thereafter, very little time is needed at the end of an erase pulse to effect this response.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1999Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: Hyundai Electronics America, Inc.Inventors: I-Chuin Peter Chan, Feng Frank Qian, Hsingya Arthur Wang

Patent number: 6167600Abstract: A columbarium system for the storage of human remains that includes a plurality of similarly configured storage containers is disclosed. The storage container has walls that define an enclosure having an opening at one end with a mounting plate attached thereto. The mounting plate has a pair of tabs that are arranged on opposite sides of the mounting plate and one pair of receiving grooves arranged at opposite sides of the mounting plate. The receiving grooves are dimensioned for receiving a tab from another container so that an arrangement of containers can be formed by the interlocking engagement of the tabs and grooves in adjacently arranged containers. The storage containers are self-framing in that additional framing members are not required for the erection of the columbarium system.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1999Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: Everest ColumbariumInventors: Kevin C. Patent number: 6169783Abstract: A centralized test apparatus is provided for a telecommunications network which includes local switches and a core network. Each local switch is connected through terminating lines to terminating equipment such as telephone handsets. The test apparatus enables a field engineer to obtain the identity of a terminating line from one of the local switches. When a field engineer dials the number of the test apparatus, the test apparatus retrieves the calling line identity on answering the call. It then transmits the calling line identity in speech form back to the calling line. After transmitting the calling line identity, the test apparatus offers a menu of further services which comprise a ring back service and the provision of a test tone on a specified telephone line.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1998Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: British Telecommunicaitons public limited companyInventors: Alvin Brooks, Frank Graham Ward, Stephen F Lee

Patent number: 6164484Abstract: A snap fit lid for a container is described. The lid can be made to incorporate thermal insulation and engages the container internally and at its edge to form a double seal. An annular gap is formed between the double seals. A groove runs transversely to the annular gap across the internal and external seals to allow pressure equalization in the container with its surrounding environment. The closure straddles the container at its top and snaps to the container top to create a pair of offset opposed seals for a snug fit to the container. The closure is particularly amenable to use in tray sized containers used extensively in foodservice applications.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: Igloo CorporationInventors: Joseph Frank Fiore, Kathleen G. Patent number: 6165308Abstract: An improved process for manufacture of polymer coated composite substrates is described. a coated composite substrate is prepared in the press by applying a layer of a primer coating composition to the surface of a compressible mat comprising fibers and/or particles and a resin binder. The primer coating composition is formulated preferably as a fast setting polymer latex capable of forming a chemically crosslinked polymer matrix when applied to the surface of a compressible mat. A thermosetting top coat composition can be applied directly over the wet primer coating composition before heat-processing the mat to improve surface quality and release characteristics. Compressing and heating the coated mat produces a primed composite substrate directly out of the press.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: Lilly Industries, Inc.Inventors: Frank Chen, Greg Muselman, Travis W. Patent number: 6166689Abstract: An adaptive beamformer and signal processor for sonar and other signal receptor arrays, in which beamforming is accomplished by correlation feedback loops providing matched weighting across the array. To constrain the adaptive beamformer thus comprised against cancellation of useful signals from a particular angular region, which normally is the beam mainlobe or boresight region, one or more spatial notch filters are interposed within the correlation feedback loops for preventing signal suppression within such angular region.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1970Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventors: Frank R. Patent number: 6164706Abstract: A molded sweep elbow tube connector includes a molded tube connector member comprising a first linear tube end portion, a second linear tube end portion, and a curved sweep tube portion defined by a relatively large sweep radius and joining the two end portions to form an integral one-piece molded part. The tube connector member forms an interior passageway for carrying a flow of fluid, characterized by a sweep bend between the two end portions, permitting fluid laminar flow through the tube connector. The tube connector member has a thick wall thickness over at least a portion of the curved sweep tube portion and a thin wall thickness over the first linear tube end. The thin wall thickness facilitates the removal of a curved core pin from the part through a linear tube end portion after injection molding, since the plastic material will flex enough to permit the pin to be stripped without damaging the part.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Inventor: Frank F. Hayes, Jr.
