  • Patent number: 6049751
Abstract: A multi-speed transmission has a main transmission section and a splitter section. The electronic control for this transmission is operable to either provide the actuation of the splitter system or not allow that actuation. Thus, the operator of the vehicle is able to request either a smaller number of available speed ratios or a larger number of available speed ratios by selecting the appropriate electronic control. The vehicle manufacturer is able to tailor the vehicles to have a transmission which is appropriate to the needs of its customer without having to change the transmission. Moreover, upon resale, a transmission that was initially provided with only a smaller number of speeds may be easily upgraded to provide additional speeds. The control is further reprogrammable to either provide or not provide actuation of the splitter gear. The control may be actuated remotely, such as by a satellite, to provide the additional speed ratios based upon expected driving conditions.

  • Patent number: 6047820
Abstract: A greeting card and gift display kit is configured to instill a sense of surprise in an examining customer, so that the customer feels as though he or she is the recipient of a gift, and thereby receives emotional enjoyment, and is motivated to purchase the card and gift for someone else. The kit includes a transparent display case containing a gift box in which both the gift and the card are inserted upside-down, plus wrapping materials for the gift box. The greeting card is placed on top of the box lid facing the front side of the display case, so that a `gift-related` expression on the greeting card is viewable through the front of the display case. A folded card containing use instructions and an aperture for viewing the open gift box from the rear of the display case is inserted in the bottom of the display case.

  • Patent number: 6048741
Abstract: A device repair process that includes removing a passivation polyimide layer. The passivation polyimide layer is removed using a first-half ash followed by a second-half ash. The device is rotated during the second-half ash. The device is then cleaned using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and a subsequent light ash step is implemented. After the passivation polyimide layer is removed, a seed layer is deposited on the device. A photoresist is formed on the seed layer and bond sites are formed in the photoresist. Repair metallurgy is plated through the bond sites. The bond sites are plated by coupling the device to a fixture and applying the current for plating to the fixture. The contact between the device and the fixture is made though bottom surface metallurgy. After plating, the residual seed layer is removed and a laser delete process is implemented to disconnect and isolate the nets of the device.

  • Patent number: 6049578
Abstract: A digital plant protection system for use in nuclear power plants of the pressurized water type includes cross-connected sensed-parameter processing channels that provide a suitably conditioned digital value to a digital comparator that tests the conditional digital value against a predetermined value to determine whether or not the sensed parameter has been exceeded. A comparator is associated with each of the plural channels and receives a separate measurement of the sensed parameter for each channel. If a sensed-parameter is determined to be out-of-specification by 2 of 4 or more channels, a `trip` signal is generated to effect remedial action.

  • Patent number: 6049606
Abstract: The invention provides an audio subsystem for use in a telephone terminal operable in handsfree mode and comprises a receive path including a receive transducer for generating audio signals from a received signal and a transmit path including a transmit transducer for converting audio signals to electrical signals for transmission to a far-end user. An acoustic echo canceller is communicatively coupled between the receive path and the transmit path and includes a subtractor circuit connected serially with the transmit transducer. The echo canceller is responsive to control signals for controlling the subtractor circuit. The subsystem comprises means for detecting a near-end talking condition including first circuit means for measuring the level of the total energy of the out-of-telephony-band components in the signal from the transmit transducer and circuit means for comparing the energy level represented by an output signal from the first measurement circuit to a first predetermined threshold.

  • Patent number: 6049697
Abstract: A computer-based hand-held translator device for use in relation to preparing a numeric message for sending from a telephone having a telephone keypad to a numeric pager and also in relation to displaying an alpha message originally received as a numeric message on a numeric pager. Keystroke entry of alpha and numeric keys create alpha mode and numeric mode messages on a display. Entry of a translator actuator on the keyboard accesses a chip that translates an alpha mode message on the display to a numeric mode message on the display and that translates a numeric mode message on the display to an alpha mode message in accordance with an algorithm loaded into the chip. At the sender side the alpha message on the display is translated into a numeric mode that is entered onto a telephone keypad targeted to a pager. At the receiver side, the numeric message is entered onto the translator device and then translated to an alpha message. A personal notebook system is optionally included in the translator device.

  • Patent number: 6047452
Abstract: A cylindrical shaped mandrel is used as a support inside the sleeve of tubular knit fabric, for maintaining the cylindrical shape of the fabric during extraction and compacting processes. Encasing the fabric and the mandrel is a larger diameter cylindrical ring member which presses the fabric against the mandrel in order to perform the extraction and compaction processes. The ring member extends for some distance in the longitudinal direction of travel of the knit fabric and contains a mechanism, such as a detent, for retaining the mandrel in place. A rope of tubular fabric is conveyed into the mandrel/ring assembly by an endless conveyor or belt made from a flexible material such as rubber. As the fabric is fed onto the mandrel, the belt forms a cylindrical sleeve around the fabric and the mandrel and is compressed by the cylindrical ring.

  • Patent number: 6048903
Abstract: The level of heavy density lipoproteins (HDL) in the blood of a human subject can be in eased by administering dosages of between 50 and 1,000 milligrams of trans-resveratrol to the subject daily. This same dosage reduces the level of light density lipoproteins (LDL) in the blood of the subject. By increasing the blood level of HDL and decreasing the blood level of LDL in the subject, the risk of hypercholesterolemia in the subject is reduced.
