  • Patent number: 4648740
Abstract: An improved manhole seal for sealing a manhole lid to the frame. The frame has an upwardly facing ledge and an annular surface bordering the outer extremity of the ledge. The lid encloses the manhole and has a lower surface seated directly on the ledge and an outer peripheral surface abutting the annular surface of the frame. In addition, the lid is provided with an angular surface which interconnects the lower surface and the outer peripheral surface. An annular gasket seals the lid to the frame and has a generally triangular cross section. The gasket includes a first surface resting on the ledge, a second surface disposed in engagement with the annular surface of the frame and a third diagonal surface which is disposed in engagement with the angular surface on the lid. The angularity of the third surface of the gasket with respect to the horizontal, is greater than the angularity of the angular surface on the lid to provide a positive seal between the members.

  • Patent number: 4625881
Abstract: A pressurized tank construction having a resilient protective skirt attached to a head of the tank. A ring is welded to the tank head prior to heat treatment of the tank. After heat treatment a second ring carrying an annular resilient skirt and having a larger diameter than the first ring is secured directly to the first ring so there is no direct attachment of the second ring to the tank. The skirt provides a stable support for the tank and cushions the tank during handling and transporting. With smaller sized tanks a metal ring having a laterally extending outer lip is welded to the tank head and a resilient ring is snap-fitted into engagement with the lip to provide a support for the tank.

  • Patent number: 4608787
Abstract: A manhole seal construction adapted to engage the outer surface of the manhole frame and the chimney to seal the corbel joint from the outside and prevent leakage of water and entry of foreign material into the joint and manhole. A resilient ring having a hook-like upper section is engaged with the outwardly extending flange on the manhole frame, and the ring has a thin, stretchable central section which extends across the corbel joint. The lower portion of the ring terminates in a lower section having a series of internal ribs that seal against the chimney and having an outer circumferential groove to receive a clamping band. To provide additional sealing, an annular sealing gasket is bonded to the internal shoulder on the manhole frame and the manhole cover seats on the gasket to prevent leakage from the street into the manhole through the joint between the cover and the frame.

  • Patent number: 4511055
Abstract: A steel tank construction having a resilient protective skirt. The tank has a dome-shaped end head and a plurality of threaded studs are arranged in a generally circular pattern and extend outwardly from the head. A metal ring is provided with a plurality of outwardly extending projecting areas and each area is provided with an opening that receives one of said studs. An annular rubber-like protective skirt is vulcanized to the outer surface of the ring. Nuts are threaded on the outer ends of the studs to removably secure the ring to the tank head. The construction of the invention enables the protective skirt to be applied to the steel tank without welding and after annealing. As the ring and protective skirt are removably connected to the tank head, the ring can be removed in the field for replacement of the skirt if it becomes worn or damaged.

  • Patent number: 4372458
Abstract: A protective skirt for a barrel or other container. The assembly includes a cylindrical skirt made of resilient material which is bonded to the outer surface of a stamped metal backing ring. The inner and outer annular edges of the ring project beyond the corresponding edges of the skirt and are welded to the dome-shaped head of the barrel or container. The inner peripheral surface of the skirt is formed with a groove which acts as a hinge point to prevent buckling of the skirt under heavy impact. The resilient skirt will substantially increase the service life of the barrel or container by cushioning impact during handling, and the welded backing ring acts to reinforce the head area of the barrel.
