Patent number: 5035279Abstract: The apparatus utilizes twin casting drums and a cast-on site removed from a sump formed between the two drums. The apparatus forms a completely uniform continuous metal sheet without a molten center when the sheet emerges from between the casting drums. Complete solidification of the metal sheet does not take place on a single casting drum, allowing for sheeting of substantially greater thickness to be uniformly cast.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1990Date of Patent: July 30, 1991Assignee: Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau Gesellschaft m.b.HInventors: Hermann Rametsteiner, Karl Schwaha, Franz Hirschmanner, Heinz Bramerdorfer

Patent number: 4960164Abstract: When continuously casting a thin strip, metal melt is cast onto the drum surface of a first casting drum. A casting gap is formed by a second casting drum spaced apart with its drum surface from the first casting drum by the thickness of the strip. Strand shells form on the drum surfaces of the first and second casting drums. In order to enable the casting of strips having different thicknesses, a sump is formed at a distance from the cast-on site of metal melt on the drum surface of the first casting drum. Between the sump and the cast-on site on the drum surface of the first casting drum, a strand shell of a predetermied thickness is formed. The casting gap is adjusted in a position on the circumference of the first casting drum such that the two strand shells formed on the drum surfaces in terms of their maximum thickness, in total, correspond at least the thickness of the cast strip.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1989Date of Patent: October 2, 1990Assignee: Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau Gesellschaft m.b.h.Inventors: Hermann Rametsteiner, Karl Schwaha, Franz Hirschmanner, Heinz Bramerdorfer

Patent number: 4608014Abstract: A coiler-furnace unit comprises a coiler having a heatable coiler mandrel, which is disposed in a heat insulating housing, and strip guiding means comprising pressure applying rollers for engaging a strip to be coiled at least two cylindrical guide shoes, which extend around and are engageable with the coiler mandrel. In order to avoid heat losses, at least one heat insulating shielding element is provided, which is adapted to be introduced into the annular clearance defined on one side by the guide shoes when they have been retracted from the coiler mandrel and by the pressure-applying rollers and on the other side by the coiler mandrel or the strip coiled on said mandrel.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1985Date of Patent: August 26, 1986Assignee: Voest-Alpine AktiengesellschaftInventors: Rudolf Buchegger, Franz Hirschmanner

Patent number: 4572453Abstract: A coiler comprises a rotatably mounted coiler shaft, adapted to be driven, and a hollow reel, non-rotatably connected to the coiler shaft and containing a mechanism for expanding the coil. The expanding mechanism is adapted to be actuated by an actuator and comprises radially adjustable pressure-applying members, adapted to protrude through apertures in the reel at its periphery. To ensure that the coiler will be operable even under high loads, the pressure-applying members are spaced along the reel and mounted on two diamatically expanding opposite members, operatively connected to the actuating mechanism. The expanding members are pivoted on diametrically opposite axes which extend parallel to the axis of the coiler shaft.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1984Date of Patent: February 25, 1986Assignee: Voest-Alpine AktiengesellschaftInventor: Franz Hirschmanner

Patent number: 4554812Abstract: A plant for hot-rolling strip or plate stock comprises roller conveyors for conveying the stock to be rolled, which is guided on the roller conveyors by side guards, which are provided on the roller conveyors near their side edges and adjustable transversely to the direction of travel on the roller conveyors. To ensure that on such roller conveyor provided with the side guards the cooling of the stock to be rolled will be minimized, the roller conveyors are provided with coverings, which are supported by the side guards and movable in unison with at least one of the side guards.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1984Date of Patent: November 26, 1985Assignee: Voest-Alpine AktiengesellschaftInventors: Franz Hirschmanner, Rudolf Buchegger, Franz Brettbacher

Patent number: 4442690Abstract: A coiler-furnace combination comprises a horizontal coiler, a strip guide which comprises two pressure rollers for forcing the strip against the coil and two part-cylindrical guide segments, one of which precedes the other in the winding sense and adjoins a strip transfer bridge for transferring the strip to and from the coiler, and a strip lifter. To simplify the structure, the two guide segments are secured to arms which pivoted on pivots disposed outside the heat-shielding hood and parallel to the mandrel. The strip lifter is constituted by the delivery edge of that guide segment which succeeds the other in the coiling sense. The strip transfer bridge consists of a roller conveyor and at its end facing the mandrel has a pressure roller for forcing the strip against the coil.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1982Date of Patent: April 17, 1984Assignee: Voest-Alpine AktiengesellschaftInventors: Franz Hirschmanner, Ernst Rom
