  • Patent number: 4809531
Abstract: Metal billets trapped in the billet container of an indirect extrusion press are removed by indirect extrusion in the reverse direction until the billet size is reduced sufficiently for the residue to be expelled bodily from the container. The stem used to support the container-closing plug constitutes, or is replaced by a stem for effecting the reverse indirect extrusion.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 18, 1981
Date of Patent: March 7, 1989
    Assignee: SMS Schloeman-Siemag Aktiengesellschaft
    Inventors: Franz-Josef Zilges, Johannes-Ulrich Weiss
  • Patent number: 4316373
Abstract: A tube extrusion press extrudes tubes through the annular space formed when a mandrel projects into the aperture of an extrusion die. In order to prevent oxidation of the extruded product, the outside of the tube passes into a cooling section immediately downstream of the die, and a protective gas is blown into the interior of the tube through the mandrel which is hollow and has an opening in its tip. Both the inside and the outside of the tube may be coated with a liquid emulsion, and the hollow mandrel can have internal channels for the passage of a cooling liquid.

Date of Patent: February 23, 1982
    Inventors: Franz-Josef Zilges, Heinrich Kutz
  • Patent number: 4212182
Abstract: In order to prevent heat loss by conduction from the billet and billet container in an indirect extrusion press, the sealing plate, which closes off one end of the billet container bore, is made in two parts which are spaced apart when an extrusion stroke is not taking place so that an air gap appears between the two parts to interrupt the path of heat conduction through the sealing plate to the rest of the extrusion press. The air gap may be produced in the pressure plate, between the sealing plate and the moving cross-head, instead of or in addition to the gap in the sealing plate.

  • Patent number: 4084422
Abstract: An extrusion press having a press stem which can be articulated to a limited extent at its base mounting in order to allow the stem to be exactly aligned with a billet containing bore; a centering sleeve provided at one end of the bore to guide the stem; and corresponding convex and concave surfaces at the base mounting which can slide over one another to permit the articulation.

  • Patent number: 4052877
Abstract: An extrusion press for indirect extrusion has a sealing plate at one end of the bore of the billet container. This sealing plate extends a certain distance into the bore where it provides a seal against the wall of the bore. The plate also has a recess for accommodating a dummy block during extrusion, and a piston is provided behind the sealing plate to push the dummy block and butt end out of the recess at the end of extrusion.
