  • Patent number: 5746124
Abstract: A calender for treating a web of paper includes a stack of hard rollers and soft rollers. The stack includes a first set of processing nips and a second set of processing nips. Each processing nip is formed by a juncture of one of the hard rollers and one of the soft rollers. One side of the web of paper contacts against the hard rollers in the first set of processing nips and contacts against the soft rollers in the second set of processing nips. At least a last soft roller in the stack, which delimits a last processing nip that the web of paper passes through in the calender, has a lower surface roughness R.sub.a than a surface roughness R.sub.a of at least a first soft roller in the stack. The first soft roller delimits a first processing nip that the web of paper passes through in the calender. The surface roughness R. of the last soft roller is less than 0.35 .mu.m.

  • Patent number: 5671665
Abstract: A calender for treating a paper web includes a roller stack being loaded with a load on one end. The calender has at least two hard rollers each having a substantially smooth outer surface. The at least two hard rollers each have a device for heating a surface of the roller to a temperature of at least 100.degree. C. The calender also includes at least two soft rollers, wherein each of the at least two soft rollers is disposed adjacent to at least one of the at least two hard rollers to form a working nip therebetween. At least one working nip has a dwell time of the paper web passing through the working nip of at least 0.1 ms. The load on the rollers produces an average compressive stress in the at least one working nip of at least 42 N/mm.sup.2. An arithmetic mean of the numerical value of the surface temperature T, the dwell time t and the compressive stress p in all of the working nips satisfies the following relationship:a target value Zg=1.378-0.00356.multidot.T-(0.00825-5.12.multidot.10.sup.-5 T)p-?0.

  • Patent number: 5669295
Abstract: A calender for the two-sided treatment of a paper web has two similar stacks each of which has at least two soft rollers and two hard rollers. Working nips are formed between each hard and soft roller. The calender has at least one working nip wherein the dwell time (t) is at least 0.1 ms, the surface temperature (T) is at least 100.degree.C., and the load (P) on the stack creates an average compressive stress in the working nip of more than 42 N/mm.sup.2. This provides a calender that is smaller and less expensive to manufacture and operate than super-calenders of the prior art but that also affords excellent finishing results.

  • Patent number: 5655442
Abstract: A calender having one stack of rollers has a working nip formed between a hard roller and a soft roller. A changeover nip is formed between adjacent soft rollers. The changeover nip is arranged approximately in the center of the roller stack. The cumulative weight of the rollers is such that the sum of the loads per unit of length of the working nips disposed above the changeover nip is at least 80 percent of the sum of the loads per unit of length of the working nips disposed below the changeover nip.

  • Patent number: 5655444
Abstract: A calender for webs of paper includes a hard roller having a smooth outer surface. A soft roller is disposed adjacent to the hard roller and forms a roll gap therebetween. The soft roller has a coating made of flexible plastic. The coating includes an inner layer and an outer layer. The inner layer is made of a first plastic material and the outer layer is made of a second plastic material. The outer layer has lesser flexibility and greater hardness than the inner layer. The outer layer has an outer surface having wear properties such that under normal operating conditions the average roughness R.sub.a does not exceed 0.5 .mu.m.

  • Patent number: 5571066
Abstract: A heatable roll (2) for calendering, smoothing and similar systems and a method for operating the roll incorporating an inductively operating external heating system (9) and an internal heating system (13). The internal heating system is limited to the end sections of the roll. On reaching a preset temperature level at the roll ends, the heat output of the internal system can be reduced or preferably switched off. As a result, the heating-up period of the roll is shortened, the design of the roll is kept simple, and thermal stressing of the roll is reduced.

  • Patent number: 5477659
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for the packaging of a material-web roll, includes the roll being surrounded on all sides by packaging material. The packaging material is closed by a pleating device for the pleating of the axial projections of the packaging material on the end faces of the roll. A device for applying the outer end face covers is also included. When packaging the roll, air is enclosed within the package which often results in a bursting of the package when the roll is being deposited on one of its end faces. To avoid this bursting, a portion of the air mass is removed from the interior of the packaging material and after closing the package, the volume of the still enclosed air is being reduced by the provision of a heating device for heating at least a portion of the air volume being enclosed by the packaging.

  • Patent number: 5042373
Abstract: A guard at the inlet side of the nip of two rolls in a calender has a hollow support for two blocking devices with movable sections extending close to the peripheral surfaces of the rolls to prevent injury to the fingers of an operator. The support defines one or more channels for steam or for another fluid medium which is discharged through one or more rows of ports to moisturize a running web of paper, foil or textile material or to dry, heat or cool the web and/or the rolls.

  • Patent number: 5029521
Abstract: A calendar wherein a bottom roll and a deformable top roll flank one or more intermediate rolls is operated in such a way that the shape of the top roll is caused to conform to that of the adjacent intermediate roll before the nip of the top roll with the adjacent roll is narrowed. At least the top roll is heated to enhance the satinizing effect upon paper webs without unduly affecting the specific volume of treated material. It is further proposed to subject the bottom roll to preliminary deformation and/or to heat the bottom roll and/or one or more intermediate rolls.

  • Patent number: 4290351
Abstract: The lowermost roll of a row of superimposed rolls in the stand of a calender is movable downwardly at a continuously increasing speed through a first distance which suffices to increase the width of clearances between neighboring rolls in the event of breakage of the running web so that the rolls cannot damage each other, and thereupon through a second distance which is at least 50 percent of the first distance. The lowermost roll is braked only during movement through the second distance so that the first distance can be covered, under the action of gravity alone or under the action of gravity plus the action of several double-acting hydraulic cylinders, within a fraction of the time which is required for adequate separation of rolls in a calendar wherein the lowermost roll must be braked during travel through the first distance.

  • Patent number: 4171107
Abstract: A winding-up device for paper webs, especially wide paper webs, on a driven cylinder with a guiding roller which is adapted in response to an increase in the diameter of the wound up web material by means of two cylinder-piston units to be tilted away from the cylinder shaft while a constant distance is maintained between the guiding roller and the surface of the wound-up webs. The device comprises two pitot heads or tubes respectively radially directed toward each end of the cylinder and toward the wound-up webs. The device furthermore comprises two converter containers individually connected to the cylinder chambers on both sides of the piston of the hydraulic cylinder piston units, and acted upon by different pressures. The winding-up device also has a 2/2 way valve and a parallelly arranged check valve while the pitot head and the converter containers are adapted together to be connected to a compressed air network.
