  • Publication number: 20030104892
Abstract: A hybrid drive system for a four-wheel drive system arranged to supply motive power to a primary output shaft of a transfer case from an internal combustion engine and to a secondary output shaft from an electric motor/generator. The transfer case is comprised of a planetary gearset having an input driven by the motor/generator and an output directing drive torque to the secondary drivelines. This hybrid drive arrangement permits use of a modified transfer case in place of a conventional transfer case in a traditional four-wheel drive driveline.

  • Patent number: 6533095
Abstract: A hydraulic coupling for use in an all wheel drive system, utilized in association with a front wheel drive transaxle, including a multi-plate clutch assembly operably connecting two relatively rotatable members and an actuator assembly for actuating the clutch assembly in response to speed differentiation between the two rotary members. The actuator assembly includes a hydraulic pump, a piston disposed in a piston chamber, and a fluid distribution system including a first flow path for supplying hydraulic fluid from a sump to the hydraulic pump and a second flow path for supplying hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic pump to the piston chamber. Hydraulic pressure in the piston chamber controls the magnitude of the clutch engagement force exerted by the piston on the clutch assembly. A control valve assembly is located in the piston chamber, in close proximity to the clutch pack where a majority of heat is generated.

  • Publication number: 20020139634
Abstract: An automated multi-speed transmission includes an engine clutch operable to establish a releasable drive connection between the engine and an input shaft, an output shaft adapted to transfer power to the driveline, and a synchromesh geartrain having a plurality of constant-mesh gearsets that can be selectively engaged to establish a plurality of forward and reverse speed ratios. The transmission also includes power-operated dog clutches for selectively engaging the constant-mesh gearsets, and a controller for controlling coordinated actuation of the engine clutch and the power-operated dog clutches. The power-operated dog clutch associated with the low and the top gear are used during downshifts and upshifts, respectively, to actuate a clutch assembly for synchronizing the speed of the input shaft and the selected gear prior to engagement of its corresponding dog clutch.

  • Patent number: 5644104
Abstract: An assembly is disclosed for permitting the transmission of an electrical signal between areas. A housing defines first and second areas having different pressures. A sleeve threadingly engaged with the housing defines a port, and an electrically conductive button is disposed at least partially in the port. An input wire extending into the port is connected to the button at a first point, and an output wire is connected to the button at a second point and extends into the second area. A first compressible insulator is disposed between the button and the housing, and a second compressible insulator is disposed between the button and the sleeve. An insulative O-ring is disposed between the first insulator and the second insulator, and a third insulator is disposed between the sleeve and the second insulator.

  • Patent number: 5150685
Abstract: An apparatus and method for converting a fuel injected internal combustion engine normally operated with a conventional fuel such as gasoline to operate with an alternative fuel are disclosed. The apparatus comprises an alternative fuel introduction assembly having at least one alternative fuel injector, a temperature sensor, and an electronic translator. The electronic translator is adapted to receive conventional fuel injector control signals generated by an electronic control module, and to receive an output signal from the temperature sensor. The electronic translator then calculates an alternative fuel injector control signal to facilitate the supply of a required energy amount of the alternative fuel. The calculation is based upon the energy content of the alternative fuel, the temperature of the alternative fuel, and the flow and operating characteristics of the alternative fuel injector relative to a conventional fuel injector. Preferably, the alternative fuel is natural gas.
