  • Patent number: 4118320
Abstract: A method and apparatus for agitating and scrubbing a filter bed in which a tubular arm is disposed in the bed near the top thereof and is adapted for rotation on a vertical central axis. The arm has nozzles extending from opposite sides thereon on respective sides of the center and is caused to rotate in the filter bed by the supply of air under pressure through the arm to the nozzles. Other nozzles can be mounted on the ends of the arm to treat the filter bed outwardly from the ends of the arm. The air supplied to the nozzles may be enriched with oxygen. The filter bed is preferably backwashed by upward flow of water therethrough simultaneously with the agitation and scrubbing of the upper portion thereof with the air jets.

  • Patent number: 4113183
Abstract: In sand type filters, a pipe is often diposed beneath the surface of the sand bed and is rotatable on a vertical axis, located in the middle of the length of the pipe, horizontally and has nozzles extending along the trailing side of the pipe on each side of the axis of rotation. When these nozzles are supplied with fluid under pressure they cause the pipe to rotate and the water from the nozzles will agitate the filter and wash the soil therefrom, which can then be removed from the filter. A nozzle for this purpose is illustrated in my U.S. Pat. No. 3,351,292 and the present invention represents an improvement thereon by providing additional passages for fluid from the nozzle which not only assist in impelling the pipe in its rotary action but also provide for increased agitation of the filter bed.

  • Patent number: 4009725
Abstract: A grooming device in the form of a comb element, especially a pocket comb element, having coarse teeth on one end and fine teeth on the other end and a back portion extending along the root ends of the teeth. A brush element is carried on the comb near the inner ends of the fine teeth so that the comb can serve for combing the hair but, also, for brushing. The comb element may also have stiff bristles for use as a nail brush, or an additional nail brush element can be provided. The back portion of the comb may also carry a mirror element and/or a strip of abrasive material or a file element and may also be recessed for detachably receiving a coin, such as a dime. The comb may have a pocket clip connected to the back portion.
