  • Patent number: 4393979
Abstract: A closure for an aperture in a container wall having an annulus of gasket material around the aperture, has a plug portion and a peripheral flange extending axially and outwardly of the plug portion to terminate in a feather edge adapted to engage the gasket material when the plug portion is inserted in the aperture. In order to seal the aperture, the gasket material applied to the wall to surround the aperture and the plug portion of the closure is force fitted into the aperture to hold the feather edge of the flange in sealing engagement with the gasket material. The closure may be used to close cans of beverages and permit easy access to the contents by pushing the plug portion into the can.

  • Patent number: 4246088
Abstract: Apparatus for electrolytically treating containers comprising a cell assembly having a cell wall surrounding a mandrel and a lid cooperating with the mandrel and cell wall to form a cavity for the reception of a container, conduit means for introducing an electrolyte into said cavity, and the conduit means including selectively operable port means for(a) conducting electrolyte through said cavity such that only the outside surface of the container can be electrolytically treated and(b) for conducting electrolyte through said cavity such that only the inside surface of the container can be electrolytically treated and(c) for conducting electrolyte through said cavity such that both the inside and outside surfaces of the container can be simultaneously electrolytically treated.

  • Patent number: 4108099
Abstract: A method of forming an article from sheet metal in a press, in which method a water reducible coating is applied to the work piece in the press to serve not only as a lubricant and coolant during pressing but also as a hardenable coating on the work piece after pressing. The use of an ethyl acrylate-styrene-acrylic acid co-polymer in water is described. Further coatings may be applied to the first coating either before or after hardening of the first coating.

  • Patent number: 4048935
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a container body side seam construction wherein a metal body blank is provided with adhesive strips along opposite edges thereof, followed by the forming of hooks at such opposite edges. Thereafter, the body blank is formed in a conventional body-making machine so as to first interlock the hooks and then, while the hooks are engaged, flattening the hooks to form an interlocked side seam wherein the adhesive strips are in tightly clamped relation with respect to one another and portions of the side seam. While the adhesive strips are so held, the side seam is heated so as to effect bonding of the adhesive strips. The principal advantage of the container body side seam construction is that no external means is required to hold the side seam portions in their proper positions while the adhesive strips are being heated and then permitted to set.
