  • Patent number: 4707902
Abstract: For the accurate register alignment of a blanket on a blanket or plate cylinder for selected-area, in-line varnishing in a rotary press, clamping devices are provided with registration means each comprising two axially spaced, radially directed register pins which are situated beneath the outer surface of the cylinder and cooperate in exact register with recesses provided in the associated ends of the blanket. The clamping device for the front blanket end is adapted to be fixed in a zero position by means of associated markings at the front blanket end and an associated marking on the blanket or plate cylinder. The two clamping devices together with the rotatable tensioning spindles are disposed to be axially displaceable in the plate cylinder by means of adjusting devices.

  • Patent number: 4624183
Abstract: An ink metering device for the fountain roller of a printing press including a plurality of ink slides in the ink fountain wherein each slide has a metering element of duct width movable by an adjusting screw which is connected to an adjusting pin and biased by a spring toward the fountain roller to produce a metering gap wherein the spring element is supported between a fixed part of the ink fountain and the metering element and a length-equalizing element is provided permitting transmission of an adjusting movement to the adjusting pin such that the lenth-equalizing action is effective only by overcoming the force of the spring element. In the preferred embodiment, the adjusting pin is rigid with the metering element and the other end is screwed into a length-equalizing coupling connected to a selective drive mechanism with the intermediate portion of the pin being supported for axial movement in a guide block.

  • Patent number: 4534290
Abstract: An ink dispensing system for a printing press having an ink trough of a fountain roller and comprising a plurality of radially oriented ink spreader assemblies arranged closely side-by-side to form a substantially continuous metering edge for zonal metering of a film of ink on the fountain roller as it rotates. Each printer assembly includes a bearing member and a dispensing member, the bearing member having a tip of narrow dimension and the dispensing member having a film-forming edge. Each bearing member is biased so that its tip rides in contact with the surface of the roller to establish a positional reference for adjustment of the dispensing member. An adjusting screw mounted on the bearing member and engaging the dispensing member is adapted to retract the dispensing member a small distance rearwardly of the tip of the bearing member to thereby determine the zonal thickness of the ink film formed on the surface of the roller by the dispensing member.

  • Patent number: 4522388
Abstract: A sheet feeding assembly for a printing press including a feed table having a set of front stops and which is inclined downwardly so that a sheet travels toward the front edge of the table where it is temporarily retained in registered position. A port connected to a source of compressed air extends through the table at a position spaced from the front edge of the table. A rear feed plate is seated on the table upstream of the port and a front feed plate is seated on the table downstream of the port, the plates being substantially coplanar with their respective front and rear edges in proximity and uniformly spaced with respect to one another. The front edge portion of the rear feed plate is undercut to form an overhang which defines a transversely extending air conducting cavity which overlaps the port so that an air blast is directed at an angle upwardly and forwardly of the table to lubricate the passing sheet and to urge the sheet in the direction of the front stop.

  • Patent number: 4513663
Abstract: A mechanism for axially reciprocating at least one of the distributing rollers of a printing press. A rocker having an elongated slot therein is mounted on a first pivot and oscillated thereabout by means of a link eccentrically connected to the press drive shaft. An oscillating lever is pivotally connected to the press frame for movement about a second pivot and includes a sliding block captively held in the elongated slot of the rocker. The oscillating lever is operatively connected to at least one of the distributing rollers so as to axially reciprocate the roller in response to the oscillation of the lever. The location of the first pivot is adjustable with respect to the press frame so as to change the orientation of the elongated slot in the rocker and, thus, vary the magnitude of travel of the oscillating lever which reciprocates the distributing roller. For such purpose, the first pivot is secured in one arm of a two-armed lever, the lever being pivotally connected to the frame.

  • Patent number: 4263849
Abstract: A lock-up mechanism for a blanket cylinder in a printing press, the blanket having at each end a straight reinforcing bar formed of metal stock bent into "U" cross section. An arm recessed in the cylinder provides a U-shaped receptacle for receiving the reinforcing bar; the receptacle has first and second supporting surfaces offset from one another for engaging the opposite faces of the bar. A hook is provided on the arm adjacent the second supporting surface for hooking the near edge of the bar, the projection of the hook beyond such supporting surface approximating the thickness of the bar material. The U-shaped receptacle is of such a size as to permit insertion of the bar in a temporarily angled position to clear the hook.
