The filter is adapted to receive a fluid and to remove a selected chemical element or contaminant from the fluid. The EDI unit is coupled to the filter and adapted to recover a chemical element from the fluid and to separate the recovered chemical element from the fluid.

The membrane stack comprises a plurality of membrane sheets and a plurality of spacers interspersed between the plurality of membrane sheets.
