    Abstract: Methods for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal infections are described. Surfactant-associated protein-A (SP-A) or SP-D or an active fragment or derivative thereof is administered to mammals at risk of a gastrointestinal infection. Oral compositions of SP-A and/or SP-D are disclosed. Also disclosed is a method to prevent or treat a gastrointestinal infection in a mammal using a gene expression vector comprising the SP-A or SP-D structural gene is introduced into a mammalian cell. Also disclosed is a method to prevent or treat a gastrointestinal infection in a mammal by increasing the intestinal expression of endogenous SP-A or SP-D.
