  • Publication number: 20070034749
Abstract: A deployable airfoil assembly is disclosed that provides for selectively augmenting lift surface area of an aircraft. In one embodiment, a fixed wing is mounted to the aircraft. An auxiliary wing is moveably coupled to the fixed wing and actuatable between a retracted position and an extended position. In the retracted position, the auxiliary wing is housed within the fixed wing and, in the extended position, the auxiliary wing is positioned above the fixed wing such that a venturi passageway is defined between the auxiliary wing and the fixed wing. A sail is deployable along a length of the auxiliary wing from a boom associated with the aircraft.

  • Publication number: 20060212103
Abstract: A circulation apparatus and method for use of the same are disclosed. In one embodiment, tubing provides gas communication between an air intake portion disposed at a first end and a breathing sub-apparatus at a second end. A bladder, which may be incorporated into a clothing garment or sleeping gear, is coupled to the tubing between the first and second ends. At least one valve is disposed within the tubing in order to selectively allow gas communication from the air intake portion to the breathing sub-apparatus and selectively allow gas communication from the breathing sub-apparatus to the bladder. Following an inhalation, heated exhaled air is circulated through the bladder to maintain a healthy core temperature and prevent hypothermia.

  • Patent number: 6852690
Abstract: A composition and method for improved parenteral administration of nutrients is provided. The method comprises co-administration of nutrients, especially carbohydrates, and an insulinotropic peptide, or its derivatives, analogs, and fragments. The method and composition provide high carbohydrate nutrition while avoiding hyper- and hypoglycemia and their attendant deleterious effects.

  • Patent number: 6241195
Abstract: A retractable airfoil assembly (20) augments the wing surface area (28) of an aircraft (22) enabling it to fly without stalling at reduced speeds during takeoff and landing. The airfoil assembly includes flexible sails (42, 44) and a furling mast (24) for extending and retracting the sails. The furling mast includes a furling drum mounted for clockwise and counterclockwise rotation on a static tube (50). The flexible sail assembly also includes guide tracks (80) located along a leading edge (101) or tailing edge (40) of the wings. The tracks guide the flexible sails during extension and retraction. A drive cable (26) extends and retracts the sails (42, 44) along the guide tracks and maintains tension in the sails while they are extended.

  • Patent number: 6127150
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a protein purification construct having three tandem, coupled segments composed of a binding protein, an interconnecting linker and a variable fused polypeptide which incorporates the one or more copies of a product peptide. The binding protein is a mammalian or human carbonic anhydrase, or a modified version of the carbonic anhydrase. The protein purification construct may be employed in methods for expression of the product peptide in microbial and higher organism and for ligand immobilized affinity purification of the product peptide.

  • Patent number: 5595887
Abstract: Methods are presented for producing and purifying a variable fusion polypeptide which can be purified by affinity chromatography with the binding protein partner. The variable fusion polypeptide construct has tandem coupled segments containing one or more copies of a desired peptide linked to carbonic anhydrase as the purification binding protein. In the methods, the fusion protein is expressed in a recombinant host using a recombinant vector containing a gene encoding the fusion polypeptide. Then the expressed fusion polypeptide is purified by immobilized reversible inhibitor affinity chromatography. Finally, the purified fusion polypeptide is cleaved from the desired peptides by chemical or enzymatic means and the desired peptides purified with affinity chromatography.

  • Patent number: 4598510
Abstract: A raised-platform type of structure, including a rectangular frame having two longitudinal and two lengthwise bars fastened together at the corners with midpoints of longitudinal bars and, fastened to them, a series of tubular legs or leg receptacles, one secured adjacent each corner of the frame. Each receptacle, if any, has tubular legs slidably mounted in it and releasable means for rigidly securing the leg to its receptacle. A jack screw fits loosely in each leg and extends therebelow, and a jack nut is threaded on each jack screw to abut and support the leg. A locking nut is threaded on the lower end of each jack screw. A floor rests on and is supported by the rectangular frame.
