  • Patent number: 4891441
Abstract: A process for forming useful oligomers and higher homopolymers of 1,3- or 1,4-bis(1-chloro-1-methylethyl)benzene is disclosed which comprises polymerizing a 1,3- or 1,4-bis(1-chloro-1-methylethyl)benzene and an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal cyanate in a solvent for the organic reactant and the substantial absence of a catalyst at temperatures of between about 15.degree. C. and about 60.degree. C. until formation of the oligomers and homopolymers is substantially complete. The oligomers and homopolymers produced are related to poly-TMI type polymers and are useful together with active polyurethane coating and/or injection moldable compositions.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4556702
Abstract: Aromatic solvent-soluble linear oligomers or homopolymers of meta- or para-isopropenyl-.alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzylisocyanate characterized by high isocyanate content are disclosed. Such oligomers or homopolymers are made by catalytic solution polymerization of the monomer in methylene chloride and/or toluene solution at a temperature of from about -80.degree. C. to about -25.degree. C., followed by low-temperature neutralization of the polymerization catalyst.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4429096
Abstract: A meta- or para-compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein: X.crclbar. is an anion selected from the group consisting of R.sub.4 OSO.sub.3 .crclbar., Cl.crclbar., Br.crclbar. and I.crclbar.;A is -O- or ##STR2## wherein: n is 2 or 3;R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 which may be the same or different, are lower alkyl; andR.sub.4 is lower alkyl or allyl. Also disclosed is a method of making the compound by reacting meta- or para-isopropenyl-.alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate with either an amino alcohol or a dialkylaminoethyleneamine, and quaternzing the reaction product with an alkylating agent. The compound may be polymerized with a co-monomer such as acrylamide to yield water-soluble cationic polymers for use in water clarification, flocculation, and hair spray applications.
