Patent number: 6457080Abstract: A system and method by which bearer channels within high-speed communication channels can be directly accessed without completely breaking down the high-speed data communication channel. The present invention provides a flexible approach in which individual bearer channels can be accessed and in which data within an accessed bearer channel can easily be changed.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1998Date of Patent: September 24, 2002Assignee: MCI Communications CorporationInventors: Frederick A. Sherman, Ranga R. Dendi, Robert G. Leonard, Daniel Hutton, Joseph A. Scivicque

Patent number: 6278707Abstract: A communication system includes an interface between two networks, for example the public telephone system and an IP-based network. The system includes a modem bank which receives bearer channel inputs and provides outputs to the second network. A protocol converter interfaces with a signaling network such as a common channel signaling (CCS) network (e.g., an Signaling System 7 network). The protocol converter communicates signaling information to the modem bank. A resource manager is coupled to the protocol converter and includes a memory which stores status information relating to the system.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1998Date of Patent: August 21, 2001Assignee: MCI communications CorporationInventors: Ian MacMillan, Frederick A. Sherman, Ranga Dendi, Dale Gil Read

Patent number: 6208657Abstract: A programmable gateway for processing protocol conversion for a virtual bearer channel platform. The platform includes a plurality of transaction processing units (TPUs). Each TPU processes service requests transmitted by a caller or transmits service requests to a destination called party. The platform has a distribution network that interfaces with the TPUs and acts as a shared bus between the TPUs. The platform receives and transmits communications with a communications network over bearer channels of a high bandwidth pipe. A cross-connecting controller multiplexes the signals coming into the platform over the bearer channels onto the distribution network, and also demultiplexes signals going out over the bearer channels from the distribution network. A resource manager provides a centralized control for the allocation of bandwidth to the transaction processing units.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1998Date of Patent: March 27, 2001Assignee: MCI Communications CorporationInventors: Ranga R. Dendi, Frederick A. Sherman, Timothy A. Morgan, Robert Gary Leonard, Duke Bond

Virtual bearer channel platform for processing service requests received in the form of channel data
Patent number: 6047005Abstract: A virtual bearer channel platform includes a plurality of transaction processing units. Each transaction processing unit processes one or more service requests received as a call on a bearer channel. The call data is distributed to individual transaction processing units using a high-speed shared network such as a SONET-type network. In one embodiment, the standard SONET format is modified to eliminate fields which contain data of no significance to the present environment. In another embodiment, the standard SONET format, itself, is used. The platform includes a resource manager for allocating the newly received calls to individual transaction processing units. The resource manager sets up outbound calls when requested by a transaction processing unit. A gateway interfaces with the resource manager and the external communication network for assisting in call setup in both inbound and outbound directions.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1998Date of Patent: April 4, 2000Assignee: MCI Communications CorporationInventors: Frederick A. Patent number: 5978387Abstract: A system and method for dynamically provisioning digital data services. Connection setup for the digital data services is accomplished through messages transported on a common channel signaling network. These messages permit an originating user to automatically provision a data communications connection that has a dynamically adjustable bandwidth.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1996Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: MCI Communications CorporationInventor: Frederick A.
