  • Publication number: 20220261361
Abstract: Memory controllers, devices, modules, systems and associated methods are disclosed. In one embodiment, an integrated circuit (IC) memory device is disclosed. The memory device includes an array of storage cells and command interface circuitry to receive an internal transfer command. In response to the internal transfer command, transfer logic reads data from a first portion of the array of storage cells, transfers the data as on-chip transfer data, and writes the on-chip transfer data to a second portion of the array of storage cells. In response to the command interface circuitry receiving an interrupt command, the transfer logic pauses the internal transfer operation, and carries out an unrelated memory access operation involving at least the first portion of the array of storage cells or the second portion of the array of storage cells.

  • Patent number: 11393550
Abstract: A memory controller generates error codes associates with write data and a write address and provides the error codes over a dedicated error detection code link to a memory device during a write operation. The memory device performs error detection, and in some cases correction, on the received write data and write address based on the error codes. If no uncorrectable errors are detected, the memory device furthermore stores the error codes in association with the write data. On a read operation, the memory device outputs the error codes over the error detection code link to the memory controller together with the read data. The memory controller performs error detection, and in some cases correction, on the received read data based on the error codes.

  • Patent number: 11392452
Abstract: A first serializing stage is provided with a stream of data words composed of sub-words that each have values that associate each of the sub-words with the same error detection code value. For example, the values selected for each sub-word may each be associated with even parity. One or more serializing stages time-multiplex the sub-words into a stream of sub-word sized data. At the serializing stage that receives sub-word sized data stream, the data is checked to determine whether any of the sub-words is no longer associated with the error detection code value. Serializing/deserializing stages are selectively controlled to replace one or more data bits from a word being serialized/deserialized with an error detecting code value (e.g., parity). A subsequent serializing/deserializing stage is enabled to use the inserted error detecting code values and the data in the received words to determine whether an error has occurred.

  • Publication number: 20220222189
Abstract: A memory controller and buffers on memory modules each operate in two modes, depending on the type of motherboard through which the controller and modules are connected. In a first mode, the controller transmits decoded chip-select signals independently to each module, and the motherboard data channel uses multi-drop connections to each module. In a second mode, the motherboard has point-to-point data channel and command address connections to each of the memory modules, and the controller transmits a fully encoded chip-select signal group to each module. The buffers operate modally to correctly select ranks or partial ranks of memory devices on one or more modules for each transaction, depending on the mode.

  • Publication number: 20220221989
Abstract: Memory modules, systems, memory controllers and associated methods are disclosed. In one embodiment, a memory module includes a module substrate having first and second memory devices. Buffer circuitry disposed on the substrate couples to the first and second memory devices via respective first and second secondary interfaces. The buffer circuitry includes a primary signaling interface for coupling to a group of signaling links associated with a memory controller. The primary signaling interface operates at a primary signaling rate and the first and second secondary data interfaces operate at a secondary signaling rate. During a first mode of operation, the primary interface signaling rate is at least twice the secondary signaling rate. A first time interval associated with a transfer of first column data via the first secondary interface temporally overlaps a second time interval involving second column data transferred via the second secondary interface.

  • Publication number: 20220214940
Abstract: A hybrid volatile/non-volatile memory employs a relatively fast, durable, and expensive dynamic, random-access memory (DRAM) cache to store a subset of data from a larger amount of relatively slow and inexpensive nonvolatile memory (NVM). The memory supports error-detection and correction (EDC) techniques by allocating a fraction of DRAM storage to information calculated for each unit of stored data that can be used to detect and correct errors. An interface between the DRAM cache and NVM executes a wear-leveling scheme that aggregates and distributes NVM data and EDC write operations in a manner that prolongs service life.

  • Patent number: 11379136
Abstract: Same sized blocks of data corresponding to a single read/write command are stored in the same memory array of a memory device, but using different formats. A first one of these formats spreads the data in the block across a larger number of memory subarrays (a.k.a., memory array tiles—MATs) than a second format. In this manner, the data blocks stored in the first format can be accessed with lower latency than the blocks stored in the second format because more data can be read from the array simultaneously. In addition, since the data stored in the second format is stored in fewer subarrays, it takes less energy to read a block stored in the second format. Thus, a system may elect, on a data block by data block basis, whether to conserve power or improve speed.

  • Patent number: 11361839
Abstract: A memory component and a controller communicate commands and data with each other The commands to activate and then access data, and the data itself, are all communicated between a controller and the memory component at different times. The controller and memory component each calculate a respective error detecting code (EDC) values on the activate command information (e.g., bank address and row address) and store them indexed by the bank address. When the memory component is accessed, retrieved EDC values are combined with EDC values calculated from the access command information, and the data itself. The memory component transmits its combined EDC value to the controller for checking.
