  • Patent number: 5515061
Abstract: A target electronic system forms part of a marker beacon. The target system ids in detecting the marker beacon upon deployment. A seeking electronic system for locating the target system may be mounted on an air vehicle, land vehicle, sea vehicle, or backpack. The target system, upon deployment of the marker beacon, sends out signals identifying the marker beacon's use, identity, and direction. The seeking system then responds by querying the target system of its distance. The target system then responds to this query. The seeking system then has the option of sending a signal to have the target system initiate the activation of a flare. The activated flare can then be used for visual and infrared detection.

  • Patent number: 5502449
Abstract: A ground unit capable of being carried on the back of a member of the armed orces is used in conjunction with a marker beacon. The ground unit detects and identifies the signals from the marker beacon and is also capable of indicating the direction in which the marker beacon is located. For identification purposes, a received signal at the ground unit from the beacon is checked with a known identification code signal inserted in the ground unit by the user. Upon detection of the signal the user can determine the direction to the marker beacon by scanning with a hand-held antenna system. Visual and audio information is provided to the user.

  • Patent number: 5442356
Abstract: An airborne radio system upon receipt of mode and code radio signals from a arker beacon that it is seeking, queries the marker beacon as to its slant range and direction. Upon receipt of information on the slant range and direction the airborne system and/or its operator make a determination whether to initiate a radio signal that would activate a flare on the marker beacon. Upon actuation the flare is usable for visual and infrared homing.

  • Patent number: 5427032
Abstract: A flare-antenna assembly has flare material enclosed in a cylindrical anta and forms part of a marker beacon. The flare aids in the search for the marker beacon by providing means for both visual and infrared detection. The flare is actuated in response to a specific remote radio signal being received by the antenna. The received signal is decoded by the electronic system within the marker beacon. If the received signal meets the necessary criteria the electronic system generates an electrical signal that detonates a squib embedded in the flare material. The detonation of the squib activates the flare.
