    Abstract: Aqueous alkaline coating compositions for metal substrates comprising a water soluble salt of an acrylic polymer which contains carboxyl groups, a divalent metal ion, a volatile base and a defoamer. The acrylic polymer is present in the coating composition in an amount greater than about 0.25 gm/liter and less than about 5.0 gm/liter.
