    Abstract: Probes for delivering ultrasonic energy and related methods. The probe includes a shank having a shaft coupling a proximal end to a distal end. The shank is configured to propagate ultrasonic energy from the proximal end to a tip of the distal end in a propagation direction parallel to a longitudinal axis disposed along a centerline of the shank. The tip may be positioned to substantially coincide with a displacement antinode position when the ultrasonic energy corresponds to odd integer multiples of a quarter wavelength of a resonance frequency. Multiple grooves within the shaft are configured to create multiple cavitation volumes in a medium proximate to the shank responsive to the ultrasonic energy. The multiple grooves include a second groove intervening between a first groove and the proximal end. The first groove is positioned at a distance of an integer multiple of a half-wavelength of the resonance frequency.

An electrode assembly includes a housing, an electrode, and a thermal sensor arranged inside the housing. The electrode, which includes an aperture, is configured to deliver electrical energy to a targeted area of a patient. The thermal sensor is positioned relative to the aperture of the electrode to provide a field of view through the aperture to a surface of the targeted area. The thermal sensor is configured to generate sensor data indicative of a temperature at the surface of the targeted area, and to thereby provide non-contact temperature sensing.

The transducer further includes a plurality of electrodes defined on the first surface, the electrodes having boundaries configured so that none of the exposed faces are in contact with more than one of the plurality of electrodes. The electrodes may be defined in a conductive layer deposited on the first surface of the composite body by forming a channel in the conductive layer that is aligned vertically with the dielectric kerfs. The transducer may be used to scan a treatment region with both HIFU and imaging ultrasound signals.

    Abstract: A power toothbrush (10) is disclosed having a handle (15), battery (12), ultrasonic drive circuit (14), motor (16), control unit (18), and toothbrush head (20). The toothbrush head includes bristles (26) and a waveguide (24) that is operatively connected to an ultrasonic transducer (22). The waveguide facilitates the transmission of acoustic energy into the dental fluid to achieve improved cleaning and stain removal and improved cleaning in interproximal and subgingival regions. In one embodiment an ultrasound transducer module (30) includes a plurality of piezoelectric elements (32, 34) that may be mechanically connected in series, and electrically connected in parallel. One or more contacts (36) connect the elements, and a waveguide structure (50). An impedance matching layer (38) may be provided between the waveguide and the ultrasonic transducer module. The waveguide may be formed from a relatively soft material, for example, a polymer having a hardness between 10 and 65 Shore A.
