  • Publication number: 20070267327
Abstract: A process for upgrading heavy oils and bitumen to a crude oil with properties acceptable as a refinery feedstock includes the steps of solvent de-asphalting by separating the polynuclear aromatics including asphaltenes from the heavy oil or bitumen and contacting the de-asphalted oil with biological and chemical reagents to reduce the concentrations of contaminants so as to render the resulting oil an acceptable feedstock for petroleum refineries.
