  • Patent number: 7805037
Abstract: The multiplexer includes multi-mode waveguides positioned on a base such that a plurality of the waveguides serve as input waveguides and one or more of the waveguides serve as an output waveguide. The waveguides intersect one another such that light signals traveling along a plurality of the input waveguides are combined onto an output waveguide. At least a portion of the input waveguides including a taper configured to taper the width of a light signal traveling along the input waveguide toward the output waveguide.

    Assignee: Kotura, Inc.
Inventors: Frederik Marcel Van Der Vliet, Joan Fong, Dazeng Feng, Wenhua Lin
  • Patent number: 6970611
Abstract: An optical component includes an optical device positioned between isolation channels. The isolation channels are configured to at least partially isolate different regions of the optical component from one another. The optical component also includes at least one light absorbing region positioned so as to intercept light traveling in a direction that would take the light between the optical device and an isolation channel.

  • Patent number: 6853793
Abstract: An optical device includes a ridge waveguide defined by a ridge extending from a slab of a light transmitting medium. The optical device also includes trenches extending into the slab of light transmitting medium on opposing sides of the ridge. At least one of the trenches is associated with a trench displacement that tapers from a first displacement to a second displacement. The trench displacement is the distance between the ridge and the side of a trench closest to the ridge. The optical device also includes at least one electrical contact positioned in at least one of the trenches.

  • Patent number: 6539150
Abstract: A phasar (arrayed waveguide grating) including a segmented waveguide disposed between the phasar and one of the single-mode waveguides on either the input or output side of the phasar. The segmented waveguide is optimized to produce a flattened passband of the phasar, thereby minimizing variations in the phasar spectral response. The optimization may be performed by an evolutionary algorithm which generates random variations into the design population and selects the better members in a multi-generational selection process. The flattened passband phasar is particularly useful in a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) fiber communications network.
