  • Patent number: 8201968
Abstract: A luminaire includes a heat spreader and a heat sink thermally coupled to and disposed diametrically outboard of the heat spreader, an outer optic securely retained relative to at least one of the heat spreader and the heat sink, and a light source disposed in thermal communication with the heat spreader, the light source having a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs). The heat spreader, the heat sink and the outer optic, in combination, have an overall height H and an overall outside dimension D such that the ratio of H/D is equal to or less than 0.25. The combination defined by the heat spreader, the heat sink and the outer optic, is so dimensioned as to: cover an opening defined by a nominally sized four-inch can light fixture; and, cover an opening defined by a nominally sized four-inch electrical junction box.

  • Publication number: 20120138545
Abstract: Provided herein are systems and methods for the treatment and purification of fluids (e.g., water) using a light-emitting diode (LED) light source. In one embodiment, for example, there is provided a fluid flow conduit having an LED light source and a photo-catalytic material disposed therein. The LED light source emits ultraviolet light with a peak wavelength between about 265 nm and about 400 nm. In operation, the photo-catalytic material absorbs the ultraviolet light from the LED light source, and releases free radicals into the fluid. The free radicals then degrade organic substances (e.g., bacteria) in the fluid.

  • Publication number: 20120112640
Abstract: Provided herein are systems and methods for outdoor lighting, which generally include two or more light sources. One light source is a monochromatic light source producing a light with a peak wavelength of about 580 nm or above. A second light source is a polychromatic light source producing a green-tint white light. During a standby operational mode, a control system maintains the first light source illuminated. The control system, which includes an integrated imaging system, illuminates both the first light source and the second light source when the imaging system identifies a target in an illumination area. Methods of preparing and using such outdoor lighting system are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20120075854
Abstract: A luminaire includes an electrical base, an optic, and a heat sink disposed between the base and the optic. An LED driver circuit is disposed at least partially within the heat sink, and is disposed in electrical communication with the base. An LED light source is disposed in thermal communication with one or more surfaces of the heat sink, and in electrical communication with the driver circuit, the LED assembly includes an LED module. The light source includes a printed circuit board with a plurality of projections that are bendable such that the projections are arranged on an angle when assembled on the heat sink.

  • Publication number: 20120019138
Abstract: A light-emitting diode (LED) lamp for producing a biologically-corrected light. In one embodiment, the LED lamp includes a color filter, which modifies the light produced by the lamp's LED chips, to increase spectral opponency and minimize melatonin suppression. In doing so, the lamp minimizes the biological effects that the lamp may have on a user. The LED lamp is appropriately designed to produce such biologically-correct light, while still maintaining a commercially acceptable color temperature and commercially acceptable color rending properties. Methods of manufacturing such a lamp are provided, as well as equivalent lamps and equivalent methods of manufacture.

  • Patent number: 7922356
Abstract: An illumination apparatus comprising an optics module wherein a driving circuit may be disposed within the proximal base portion of the optics module. The proximal base portion may further be releasably secured within an independent heat dissipating element. Such an apparatus may be very beneficial in light emitting diode (LED) applications due to its efficient conduction and dissipation of heat away from the LED semiconductor junction. Additionally, a releasable optics module comprising a plurality of LEDs and a driving circuit provides for cost efficient and environmentally friendly replacement of such a component at the end of its lifespan. The heat dissipating element (e.g. heat sink) may continue to be used, while only the optics module need be replaced or serviced as required. Precious environmental resources may thus be conserved and maintenance costs reduced while concurrently extending the lifespan of such an inventive illumination apparatus.
