Publication number: 20120143103Abstract: Various orthotic devices for attachment to and for manipulating a user's limb having a joint are provided. The device generally comprises an inflatable motive bladder containing a first fluid and positioned adjacent a first portion of the user's limb, and a separate therapy pad positioned adjacent a second portion of the user's limb. The motive bladder is inflatable from a lesser inflated mode to a more inflated mode, and further configured to provide a motive force to move the first portion of the user's limb so as to cause a flexion in the joint. The therapy pad includes a treatment material configured to provide thermotherapy for the second portion of the user's limb. In certain embodiments, the second portion is the user's joint. Various methods of using the orthotic devices are also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 7, 2011Publication date: June 7, 2012Applicant: ERMIInventors: Thomas P. Patent number: 7985227Abstract: Generally described the invention relates to methods and apparatuses for aligning the lower extremities of a patient with a mechanical axis. More specifically, the present invention provides an exoskeleton or external framework that positions a patient's leg into a desired mechanical axis in preparation for surgery or other medical treatment.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2010Date of Patent: July 26, 2011Inventors: Thomas P. Branch, Alexander Sattler, Jr., Fredrik Westin

Patent number: 7874996Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are generally related to the manipulation of a joint to provide therapy. More specifically, some embodiments of the present invention use inflatable members and a three point bending concept to cause flexion in a toe joint for the purpose of increasing the range of motion of the toe joint. In one embodiment, a user's foot is placed in a frame with at least one toe atop a toe bar. An inflatable member is positioned atop the user's foot and held in position with a strap attached relative to the frame. As the inflatable member is inflated, the strap increases in tension urging the toe toward the toe bar and causing actuation of the joint at the base of the toe.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2005Date of Patent: January 25, 2011Assignee: ERMI CorporationInventors: Robert B. Weinstein, Thomas P. Branch, Fredrik Westin, Alex Sattler

Patent number: 7036529Abstract: An arrangement for mixing a first and a second gas flow, for example, an inlet flow with a exhaust gas return flow in a diesel engine, comprising a line (16) for the first flow, an inlet (7) for the second flow in the line (16), in order to achieve the mixing; a streamlined body (8) arranged to be displaced in the longitudinal direction of the line (16) at the inlet (7) in order to achieve a variable venturi effect and in this way a variable suction effect and mixture of the mixed flow; and actuating means for displacing the body forwards and backwards in the line. In order to minimise the need for throttling and the accompanying pressure losses, the streamlined body (8) and the supply part (2) are designed to achieve maximal throttling in the line (16) close to the inlet (7), independently of the position of the body.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2001Date of Patent: May 2, 2006Assignee: Varivent Innovations ABInventors: Gustav Berggren, Fredrik Jansson, Fredrik Westin, Hans-Erik Ångström

Patent number: 6718054Abstract: A method and system of providing segmentation of volumetric three-dimensional image data set such as MRA images. Initially, a three-dimensional MRA volume is input. An initial surface S is then generated by thresholding the input. A signed distance function v to S is then generated, where v=v(x,t) and S is the zero level set of v(·,0).Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2000Date of Patent: April 6, 2004Assignees: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The Brigham and Women's Hospital, Inc., Institute National de Recherche en Informatique et en AutomatiqueInventors: Liana M.
