  • Patent number: 4403620
Abstract: Filter cigarettes which are produced in a filter tipping machine are conveyed past several successive testing devices, each of which monitors different characteristics of the cigarettes, thereupon past a cigarette removing device, past a segregating device and on to a conveyor for transport of satisfactory cigarettes to a packing machine or into storage. When any one of the testing devices detects a defective or presumably defective cigarette, it generates a defect signal which is transported to the segregating device for expulsion of the respective cigarette from the path which leads to the conveyor. If the operator wishes, the defective or presumably defective cigarettes which are detected by a selected testing device can be conveyed only to and expelled by the removing device in response to the corresponding defect signals so that the removed cigarettes can be examined for the purpose of ascertaining the quality of testing operation which is carried out by the selected testing device.

  • Patent number: 4284198
Abstract: Selected or successive cigarettes of a series of cigarettes which are conveyed in a making and/or processing machine are acted upon by ejecting, perforating and/or other cigarette influencing instrumentalities during travel along a selected section of their path. A pulse generating system transmits a series of timing pulses during each interval of advancement of a cigarette along a unit section of the path, and a selected timing pulse of the series of pulses is used to apply a control signal to the influencing instrumentality while the cigarette to be influenced is located in a predetermined position with respect to such instrumentality. An additional timing pulse of the same series is used to terminate the application of the control signal. The pulses which are used for application and/or termination of application of control signals can be changed in response to changing speed of the prime mover of the machine or machines.

  • Patent number: 4238994
Abstract: A continuous filter rod wherein dissimilar filter rod sections alternate with each other is monitored by a photosensitive detector which detects changes in the degree to which different sections absorb and/or reflect radiation. A pulse generator transmits signals for each unit length of the rod and such signals are multiplied and transmitted to several counters one of which ascertains whether or not the number of signals between two successive changes of the intensity of radiation is too low (this denotes that the length of filter rod sections of a certain type is insufficient), another of which ascertains whether or not the number of signals between two successive changes of the intensity of radiation is excessive (this denotes that the length of filter rod sections of a certain type is excessive), and a third of which ascertains whether or not the cutoff severs the filter rod at desired locations, e.g., midway across successive filter rod sections of a given type.
