  • Patent number: 5545260
Abstract: A method operating a pickling installation for pickling rolled strips comprises several consecutively disposed pickling basins filled with a pickling agent containing acid, through which the strip 4 is passed. A pickling agent containing acid is injected through injection nozzles disposed at least on the sides of the basin. A flexible adaptation to the respective pickling task with the aim of a reduced pickling time period is made possible if the nozzle injections on the sides are actuated variably. The pickling installation is provided for this purpose on both sides of the plurality of the basins, with injection nozzles above and below the strip traveling plane and upstream or downstream of base slide pads located in the basin.

  • Patent number: 5440889
Abstract: A method for cooling of profiled rolled material hot rolled in roll stands, especially rails on a cooling bed by natural convection or by forced air cooling, which includes conveying the rails across the cooling bed with the rail heads oriented downwards. The apparatus for effecting the method includes a cooling bed having support elements which support the rails in a suspended state with the rail heads oriented downwards.

  • Patent number: 5014412
Abstract: An invention is directed to a method and an installation for producing a hot-rolled steel strip from continuously cast primary material in consecutive work steps, wherein the primary material is brought to hot rolling temperature after solidification and is inserted into a rolling mill for rolling out into a finished strip, wherein the primary material is coiled after reaching the hot rolling temperature, is stored intermediately in a rotary hearth furnace, and is recalled, as needed, uncoiled and rolled out to form a finished strip, the intermediate storage being effected immediately prior to entering the finishing train, the coils being preferably stored intermediately in a horizontal position and with a horizontal coiling axis, a subsequent heating being effectable during the intermediate storage.

  • Patent number: 4862570
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for removing scale from a hot rolled steel strip by rolls acting by grinding and/or milling so that these rolls are uniformly effective in all regions of the steel strip and an appropriate uniform removal of the scale layer occurs. This is attained when driven grinding rolls adjustable toward the surfaces of the steel strip are provided of which at least two opposing rolls are axially slidable in opposite directions and have inversely oriented S-shape contours. These contours complement each other completely flawlessly in one definite position of the grinding rolls. In one such position the rolls provide a uniform engagement on both sides of a steel strip with a nearly rectangular profile.

  • Patent number: 4831854
Abstract: The rolling mill for mechanical descaling of hot rolled steel is constructed according to the slidable roll process with reducing rolls so that a unform operation with different and/or changing shape steel strips can obtained. This is attained when the rolling mill has at least two rolls slidable in opposite directions whose body surfaces are constructed with S-shape contours positioned inversely to each other so that these contours compliment each other flawlessly in one certain axial relative position. When sliding the rolls in opposite directions in one case the contour is decreased in the center region of the steel strip and when slid in the opposite directions in the other case the contour is increased in the center region. Thus the rolls can be adjusted to fit a gently convex steel strip profile by axially sliding the rolls in opposite directions as also rolled strips with a thickness centrally reduced in comparison to that of the edge regions can by appropriate sliding of the rolls opposite each other.

  • Patent number: 4798074
Abstract: The rolling mill or roll stand which makes a rolled product, particularly a rolled strip or strip, comprises a pair of working rolls, which if necessary are supported on a pair of supporting rolls or on a pair of the supporting rolls and intermediate rolls, and in which the working rolls and/or the supporting rolls and/or the intermediate rolls are axially slidable relative to each other. Each of the rolls of at least one of the pairs of rolls is provided with a curved contour extending to the roll body ends. These curved contours, sometimes on opposite sides, extend over only a portion of the rolled product width. The curved contour extends over the entire roll body length of each roll and has a shape such that both roll body contours entirely compliment themselves in a certain relative axial position.

  • Patent number: 4631948
Abstract: A rolling stand has a support frame, a pair of small-diameter working rolls defining a workpiece nip open perpendicular to the plane and rotatable about respective horizontal, parallel, and vertically spaced axes. A pair of large-diameter backup rolls are rotatable about respective axes parallel to and vertically flanking the working-roll axes. These backup-roll axes define a vertical plane offset from the working-roll plane. In addition each backup roll bears vertically on the respective working roll and a drive counterrotates the rolls of each roll pair to draw an elongated workpiece of predetermined maximum width generally perpendicular to the planes through the nip. The working rolls are longer than the maximum workpiece width and have end portions projecting axially beyond the workpiece. The rolls are pressed vertically toward the nip to compress and deform the workpiece thereat.

  • Patent number: 4519233
Abstract: A rolling stand comprises a housing defining a pair of parallel and spaced inner axes and a pair of parallel and spaced outer axes flanking the inner axes and defining therewith a plane. Respective inner rolls are journaled in the housing at the inner axes and have bodies axially symmetrical about the respective axes and having centered on the respective axes roll-body surfaces of noncylindrical shape and each formed by rotation of a continuously curved generatrix about the respective axis. One of the inner rolls is displaceable axially relative to the other inner roll from an end position to another position. The inner-roll surfaces are spaced in the plane in the other position at a uniform distance and in the plane in the end position at a nonuniform distance. Respective outer rolls journaled in the housing at the outer axes bear toward each other on the respective inner rolls.

  • Patent number: 4440012
Abstract: A rolling stand has a conventional housing defining a pair of parallel and spaced axes defining a plane. Respective rolls have roll ends journaled in the housing at the axes and roll bodies axially symmetrical about the respective axes and having centered on the respective axes complementary roll-body surfaces of noncylindrical shape and each formed by rotation of a continuously curved generatrix about the respective axis. One of these contoured rolls is displaceable axially relative to the other roll from an end position to another position, and the roll-body surfaces form at the plane in the other position a uniform nip and in the end position a nonuniform nip. This system is set up to be able to displace one of the rolls axially relative to the other of the rolls between the end position and the other position. These contoured rolls may themselves define the nip, or may engage and deform other rolls that define it.
