  • Patent number: 6378747
Abstract: A roof rail 10 for a vehicle article carrier, the roof rail consisting of a rail portion 12 and a pair of end supports 14. The end supports 14 or 14′ consist of the same metallic material as the rail portion 12 and are produced from bent tubular metal pieces, which are formed into the end supports 14 or 14′ by an internal high pressure forming process. The forming process does not require prior heating of the bent tubular metal pieces or the forming tool used in the forming process. The end supports (14) each have a neck portion (14a) which includes a connecting peg (16) and a clamping member (18), wherein the clamping member (18) is inserted into a longitudinal groove (20) in the connecting peg (14a) to functionally secure the neck portion to the rail portion (12).

  • Patent number: 6158637
Abstract: A roof rail for vehicles is described, having a strut (3), which is carried by at least two supporting feet (2), and having a fastening assembly, which is assigned to each supporting foot (2), for fastening it to a non-removable bearing structure (5) on the vehicle, such as a roof channel bottom (6), roof frame, bow or the like. The fastening assembly has a bolt (7) which is arranged on the supporting foot (2), and which is inserted through a hole (8) in the bearing structure (5) and is secured on the bearing structure (5) via a spring element of the fastening assembly. For the purpose of obtaining a simple installation having a snap lock, the bolt (7) to has a radial groove (9) and the spring element (10), which is arranged on the bearing structure (5) and which can be latched into the radial groove (9), to be provided as the fastening means.

  • Patent number: 5573159
Abstract: A roof railing having a rail with opposite ends and a respective support foot on each end. The support foot is a tubular extruded profile shaped to have a downwardly descending curved part which leads into a flat support surface that is below and parallel to the rail. A flattened wall region of the extruded profile rests on the top of the support surface. A hole through the support surface and the flattened wall region receives a fastening element. A cover cap over the support foot includes a web over the top and side legs down from the web and the cover cap is clipped to the support foot and may be pivoted to be upraised with respect to the support foot.

  • Patent number: 5511709
Abstract: A roof rack for a motor vehicle including two roof strips which extend longitudinally along the roof, are parallel to each other and are spaced apart. A respective support strip on each roof strip is swingable from a position in a recess on the roof strip to a position across to the other roof strip. Each support strip is swingable about a mount at a respective vertical axis. The mount includes a set screw settable to determine the amount to which the support strip may be upraised from the vehicle roof and a spring which urges the support strip upward, establishing thereby the upper and lower positions of the support strip with respect to the vehicle roof. The support strip may be locked in the lowered or upraised vertical positions.

  • Patent number: 5497924
Abstract: A roof rack rail supported at each end of the rail on the roof of a vehicle by a support foot. The support foot has a fastening bolt at one end for attaching to the roof of the vehicle and an insertion bolt at the other end for connecting with the end of the rail. A sheet metal stamped reinforcing insert is received in slits in the ends of the bolts for connecting the bolts together. The ends of the bolts and the reinforcement insert are molded in plastic to define the roof rail foot. In an alternative design, the rail is in the form of a tubular sleeve and the insertion bolts for the feet are received in the sleeve. The entire assembly of the sleeve and the reinforcements for the feet is then molded over with plastic which forms the feet and covers over the rail end integrating them with the rail.
