Abstract: A process for the preparation of an hydroxymethylene alkoxyacetic acid ester wherein a mixture of an alkoxyacetic acid ester and a formic acid ester are reacted in the presence of an alcoholic solution of an alkali metal alcoholate.

Abstract: The new compound ##STR1## is prepared and converted to the new acetal ##STR2## which is reacted with an alkali phenolate or alkaline earth metal phenolate in the presence of copper or a copper compound as a catalyst and in the presence of a diluent at a temperature between about 100.degree. and 200.degree. C. to produce the new acetal ##STR3## which can be hydrolyzed to the corresponding aldehyde which is a known intermediate for pyrethroid-like insecticides.

Abstract: 5-Halogenoalkyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yloxyacetamides of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is halogenoalkyl, with the exception of trifluoromethyl, andR.sup.2 and R.sup.3 each independently is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, in each case optionally substituted cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl, halogenoalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyalkylenoxy, alkoxy, aralkyl or optionally substituted aryl, orR.sup.2 and R.sup.3, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are bonded, form an optionally substituted heterocyclic radical which can contain further hetero-atoms,which possess herbicidal and fungicidal activity. The intermediates 5-chlorodifluoromethyl- and 5-dichlorofluoromethyl-2-chloro-1,3,4-thiadiazole are also new.

C. and 150.degree. C. and in particular between 20.degree. C. and 100.degree. C.

(III)in which Me.sup.+ is an alkali metal cation,and, in the presence of a base, with a .beta.-ketocarboxylic acid ester of the formula ##STR2## at a temperature between about -20.degree. and +100.degree. C.
