  • Publication number: 20040150932
Abstract: Methods for operating a power switch with at least one main current path and associated secondary current path with an arc extinguisher are known from the art. A current limiter can be used which switches from non-current limiting operation to the current limiting operation at high current loads. The invention is characterized by measures for returning the current limiter during the transition from the current limiting operation to the non-current limiting operation. Specifically power switches are provided with measures for preventing a recommutation of the arc from the secondary current path to the main current path and/or measures for returning the current limiter during the recommutation of the light art. A corresponding arrangement for carrying out the inventive method is provided with means (30 to 50) in the power switch (20) and/or current limiter (1) for preventing a switch failure of the current limiter (1) disposed in the secondary current path of the power switch (20).

  • Patent number: 6441709
Abstract: The current-limiting mechanism is provided in particular in order to protect electromechanical contactors from being welded by a short-circuit load. In a first step, the current-limiting mechanism closes a bridging contact of a first bridging current path in order to reduce the current load on the contactor. In a second step, its bridging function is taken over by a switching arc and by a second bridging current path, In the further course of the disconnection process, the switching arc commutates from the bridging contact onto associated running rails or arc runners and runs into an arcing chamber of the current-limiting mechanism. As a result, the short-circuit is interrupted.

  • Patent number: 6400547
Abstract: A method of monitoring state parameters in a switching device records and evaluates sensor signals of sensors which are susceptible to an interference caused by external electrical or magnetic fields. A temporal sequence of the sensor signals is evaluated by determining whether the sensor signals are disturbed or undisturbed. The interference in the sensor signals is suppressed by generating evaluation signals which correspond to the undisturbed signals. A device for monitoring state parameters of a switching device includes sensors for recording sensor signals and includes a passive interference suppression device and an active interference suppression device for suppressing the interference.

  • Patent number: 6359440
Abstract: To determine the remaining lifetime of contactor contacts, the contact spring action at the clearance gap can be determined as a substitute criterion for contact erosion, and to determine the erosion of the contact points, the change in spring action during the shutdown cycle can be measured and converted to the remaining lifetime, for which purpose, the time of the armature movement from the start of the armature movement to the start of contact opening is measured with the solenoid actuator having an armature with solenoids and associated yoke. The measured values of the time signal tk of contact opening on the load side of the switching device monitored and the time signal tA are determined by voltageless signaling of the start of armature movement. In particular for use in three-phase systems, the switching voltage is measured as a voltage change at an artificial neutral point. In the respective arrangement, a voltageless signal line is provided between the switching device and analyzer unit.

  • Patent number: 6313636
Abstract: A method for determining switchgear-specific data at contacts in switchgear and/or operation-specific data in a network connected to the switchgear includes detecting a so-called contact follow-through travel at a switching path as an equivalent criterion for an erosion of contacts, particularly for contactor contacts. A resilience change during a shutdown cycle is measured, can be used to determine the erosion and can be converted into a remaining contact life for the contacts. Accurate measurement of the armature movement from a start of the armature movement to a start of contact opening is required for that purpose. Switching states of a switching device and of the electrical network are additionally detected from signals for resilience detection. An apparatus for carrying out the method is also provided.

  • Publication number: 20010019268
Abstract: It has been suggested that to determine the remaining lifetime of contactor contacts, the contact spring action at the clearance gap can be determined as a substitute criterion for contact erosion, and to determine the erosion of the contact points, the change in spring action during the shutdown cycle can be measured and converted to the remaining lifetime, for which purpose, the time of the armature movement from the start of the armature movement to the start of contact opening is measured with the solenoid actuator having an armature with solenoids and associated yoke. • Patent number: 6225807
Abstract: To determine the remaining lifetime of contactor contacts, the contact spring action at the gap is determined as a substitute criterion for contact erosion, and to determine the erosion of the contacts, the change in spring action during a shutdown cycle is measured and converted to remaining lifetime. With a yoke and armature solenoid actuator with a solenoid, the armature path from the start of the armature movement to the start of contact opening must be measured. The time of separation of the armature from the yoke of the contactor solenoid actuator is determined from the voltage on the solenoid. The increase in magnetic resistance of the magnetic circuit when the magnetic armature is raised is determined. In the respective arrangement with an analyzing unit for determination and display of the remaining lifetime, the analyzing unit has means for detecting and measuring the voltage on the solenoid.

  • Patent number: 5844493
Abstract: Switching devices can have means for contactless switching position detection. According to the invention, magnetic field sensors arranged at suitable locations inside and/or outside a device housing are provided for switching position detection. In particular, position-dependent magnetic fields are measured for ON/OFF position detection, overcurrent triggering, and contact welding; however, the magnetic field of the current flowing is detected to recognize short-circuit triggering. Differential Hall effect sensors and Reed contacts, respectively, can be used for these purposes. In addition, a sound sensor can be provided for detecting the switching noise, whose signal is evaluated together with the overcurrent triggering signal for short-circuit detection.

  • Patent number: 5793278
Abstract: A current limiter with a controllable resistance which assumes a low value during rated service and a high value during a short-circuit disconnect. The current limiter includes a thermoplastic resistive member between two flat, metallic electrodes. Each of the flat metallic electrodes has a surface profile on the side facing the thermoplastic resistive member. The resistive member has a surface profile complementary to the surface profile on the adjacent surfaces of the flat electrodes. The flat electrodes and the resistive member are thereby inseparably connected, with the flat electrodes and the resistive member being pressed together by a pressure force. The interlocking of the surfaces results in an especially rapid readjustment of the limiter resistance from its high-resistance state during a short-circuit disconnect back to the low-resistance state during rated service.

  • Patent number: 5689397
Abstract: A single circuit-breaker is provided in the phase conductor, and the bridging circuit is provided on the load side of the single circuit-breaker, and a magnetically driven switching contact closes a bridging current branch leading to the neutral conductor. The bridging circuit conducts a part of the short-circuit current past the magnetic drive and/or the switching contact. A resistor whose resistance value amounts to between 25 and 50% of the value of the smallest load-circuit impedance (L.sub.2, R.sub.2) to be expected, may be provided in the bridging current branch. In such an arrangement, the bridging circuit and the circuit-breaker can form one unit.

  • Patent number: 5644283
Abstract: A variable high-current resistor, especially for use as a protective element in power switching technology has already been proposed, which contains carbon as a resistance material, at least one boundary layer with a transition zone to another electric conductor being provided. By applying a contact pressure, the resistance in the transition zone can be kept low. Under the prior art, the resistance is converted into a highly resistive state by means of Joulean heat. In accordance with the invention, the contact pressure of the variable high-current resistor is able to be selectively influenced, the carbon- and/or carbon-black-containing layer being pressed by the surface pressure with a preset first value against the other conductor to adjust the low-resistance state of the resistor, and that, in the event of a short-circuit, this contact pressure being able to be reduced in a short enough time to a second value, at which the resistance in the transition zone goes up by at least two orders of magnitude.
