  • Patent number: 4648439
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the continuous casting of metal strips, bands or thin slabs between two axially parallel cooled drums or cylindrical rolls. The liquid metal is introduced into a hollow mold chamber and the partially solidified cast strand is held against the outer surface of one of the rolls after passage through a gap at least until its complete solidification. In order to attain a higher casting capacity combined with simple and reliable equipment, it is proposed to select, in relation to predetermined a cooling capacity, a relationship between the thickness of the band or the like and the casting speed such that the liquid core of the band is supported against the outer surface of the one roll over at least 90.degree., preferably over 180.degree. to 210.degree..

  • Patent number: 4582119
Abstract: In a method for the continuous casting of metal, especially steel, in the form of strips or thin slabs, the molten metal is poured into a mold having cooled walls which move as the operation proceeds. To prevent defects in the strand and interference with the casting operation after the metal has flowed into the mold chamber, contact between the cooled narrow sides of the mold chamber and the liquid metal initially takes place at a contact face which represents only a fraction of the local separation distance between the two broad side cooling walls. Furthermore, before reaching the contact face, the metal is cooled in a gap between the feed inlet and the broad side wall extending between the narrow side walls. The cross-section of the gap opening corresponds substantially to the contact face.

  • Patent number: 4580615
Abstract: In a method for the continuous casting of metal, in particular steel in the form of strips or thin slabs, the molten metal is poured into a mold chamber having two arcuate cooled broad or wide side walls which rotate in a predetermined direction of casting in which the cast metal strand moves and two stationary cooled narrow side walls. To prevent defects in the strand and interruption of the casting operation, the narrow side walls of the mold chamber are thermally insulated in a first portion as seen in the predetermined direction of casting. In a second portion, the narrow side walls have high thermal conductivity over the entire distance between the broad side walls. This second portion is disposed in a substantially parallel part of the mold chamber between the broad side walls.

  • Patent number: 4251268
Abstract: A method of treating boron-containing steel for continuous casting, especially for teeming or pouring into small sectional shapes or formats with unregulated nozzles. There is introduced into the molten steel located in the casting ladle, by means of an inert carrier gas, in a powder form calcium or a compound thereof, at least one element forming a stable nitride at the melt temperature of the steel and boron or a boron compound. The thus treated steel is protected from renewed reaction with air along its path between the ladle and the continuous casting mold.

  • Patent number: 4249590
Abstract: A method of continuous casting of metals, especially steel, wherein the steel is cast into a continuous casting mold having at least two taper stages or regions which are successively arranged in the direction of travel of the cast strand. In order to accommodate the shrinkage behavior of the forming strand to different casting parameters the bath level in the continuous casting mold is altered within a number of such taper stages or regions.

  • Patent number: 4036280
Abstract: A method of, and apparatus for, starting-up the casting of a strand during continuous casting, wherein molten metal, typically steel, is teemed through a bottom pouring outlet or opening of a tundish at a throughflow rate essentially determined by the dimensions of the pouring opening, into a continuous casting mold. By means of the dummy bar head of a dummy bar there is formed a connection between the dummy bar and the solidified strand forming in the continuous casting mold and after reaching a predetermined bath level in the mold the strand is withdrawn.

  • Patent number: 3981347
Abstract: A method of, and apparatus for, the cooling of a strand during the continuous casting of metals, especially steel, wherein a cooling fluid possessing a regulatable quantity for impingement at the surface of the strand is sprayed between two guide elements neighboring one another in the direction of strand travel onto the strand surface. According to the invention, the cooling liquid or fluid is selectively sprayed from one spray pattern or two spray patterns which are essentially similarly directed and initially extend behind one another in the direction of travel of the strand and thereafter are united into a spray pattern having a flat spray characteristic, wherein the united spray pattern has a thickness and direction which approximately corresponds to that of one of the adjacently situated spray patterns.
