Patent number: 9637919Abstract: A ceiling system is disclosed in which two type of ceiling panels are mounted in a support grid. In one embodiment, the ceiling system may comprise: a support grid defining a plurality of grid openings; a plurality of grid-concealment ceiling panels mounted to the support grid and disposed in the grid openings, each of the grid-concealment ceiling panels comprising peripheral edge portions which extend beneath and at least partially conceal the support grid; and one or more tegular ceiling panels mounted to the support grid and disposed within the grid openings, wherein the one or more tegular ceiling panels do not extend beneath the support grid.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 2016Date of Patent: May 2, 2017Assignee: AWI Licensing LLCInventors: Todd M. Publication number: 20160273217Abstract: A ceiling system in one embodiment conceals the ceiling support structure to provide a monolithic ceiling appearance. The system includes the support structure and ceiling panels each having a top surface, bottom surface, and peripheral edges. In one embodiment, the peripheral edges of the panels may have a hybrid edge detail including a tongue-and-groove portion and a shiplap portion. The hybrid edges of adjoining panels are configured to both interlock via the tongue-and-groove edge features and hide the ceiling support structure via the shiplap edge features. This eliminates the need to secure all peripheral edges to the support structure for proper support. In one implementation, some but less than all peripheral edges may include mounting flanges for direct surface mounting of the panels to and hiding the support structure.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2015Publication date: September 22, 2016Inventors: SCOTT L. HUNTZINGER, G. DOUGLAS VERNAU

Publication number: 20160178145Abstract: An integrated ceiling and light system that incorporates a light module into a ceiling tile or vertical panel. In certain embodiments, the light module may be coupled directly to the ceiling tile. The light module may have a weight per unit exposed surface area that is less than a weight per unit exposed surface area of the ceiling tile. The ceiling tile may have a first weight per unit volume that is greater than a second weight per unit volume of the light module coupled thereto, thereby preventing sagging of the ceiling tile. The ceiling tile may have a recess formed therein with the light module disposed within the recess. In such embodiment, a weight of the light module may be equal to or less than three times the weight of the portion of the ceiling tile that was removed to form the recess.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 17, 2015Publication date: June 23, 2016Inventors: PETER J. OLESKE, BRIAN L. SPRINGER, ANTHONY J. JASKIERSKI, TODD M. BERGMAN, KEITH A. KOGER, CHRISTOPHER D. GAYDOS, CRAIG W. DESANTIS, JERE W. MYERS, JONATHAN P. VAN DORE, G. DOUGLAS VERNAU, KENNETH P. Patent number: 9328510Abstract: A ceiling system in one embodiment includes ceiling panels configured for attachment to an overhead support grid. The ceiling panel includes profiled first and second edges that engage parallel first and second grid support members respectively. At least one intermediate channel is formed in the top surface between the first and second edges. The channel defines a seating surface that engages a third grid support member arranged parallel to and between the first and second grid support members. The central portion of the ceiling panel is supported in a manner which allows the panel to span across and cover at least two grid openings, thereby providing a ceiling system that utilizes large format panels exceeding the size of the openings.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 2015Date of Patent: May 3, 2016Assignee: AWI Licensing CompanyInventors: Brian L. Springer, Nathan J. Baxter, G. Douglas Vernau, Ryan D. Hanuschak

Patent number: 9273465Abstract: A ceiling system in one embodiment includes an overhead support grid including a plurality of downward facing grid faces and an array of rectilinear grid openings. A plurality of grid-concealment ceiling panels are disposed in the grid openings and arranged diagonally such that corners of the panels are disposed proximate to mating corners of diagonally adjacent panels. Each panel includes peripheral edge portions which extend beneath and at least partially conceal grid faces surrounding the grid opening in which each panel is mounted. In one embodiment, the grid faces are completely concealed. Mating corners of ceiling panels meet at mutually configured chamfered corner surfaces which lie at cruciform intersections between the grid faces. The ceiling panels are arranged in diagonal rows in the support grid. Diagonal rows of filler ceiling panels are provided between diagonal rows of grid-concealment ceiling panels.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2014Date of Patent: March 1, 2016Assignee: AWI Licensing CompanyInventors: Todd M. Bergman, G. Douglas Vernau, Ryan D. Hanuschak

Patent number: 5974754Abstract: A ceiling board has a depression formed in the four corners of the face surface of the ceiling board. When the horizontal flange of one cross runner overlies the horizontal flange of the main runner, the edge of the ceiling board will rest on the flange of the main runner because the overlying runner is accommodated in the corner depression.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1994Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: Armstrong World Industries, Inc.Inventors: Darryl C. Bodine, G. Douglas Vernau
