Publication number: 20070225245Abstract: The instant invention has developed viral vectors encoding a mutant bacterial cytosine deaminase (bCD) gene, which have a higher affinity for cytosine than wild type bCD (bCDwt). The purpose of the present invention was to evaluate cytotoxicity in vitro and therapeutic efficacy in vivo of these vectors in combination with the prodrug 5-FC and ionizing radiation against human glioma. The present study demonstrates that infection with the viral vector expressing the mutant cytosine deaminase gene resulted in increased 5-FC-mediated cell killing, compared with vectors expressing the wild-type gene. Furthermore, a significant increase in cytotoxicity following infection with viral vector expressing the mutant cytosine deaminase gene and radiation treatment of glioma cells in vitro was demonstrated as compared to infection with viral vector expressing the wild-type gene.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 27, 2007Publication date: September 27, 2007Inventors: Donald Buchsbaum, G. Gillespie, James Markert, Sergey Kaliberov

Publication number: 20070092444Abstract: Described is a constitutive inward Na+ currents found in a variety of human cancers. The constitutive inward Na+ current plays a role in increased cellular proliferation, cellular migration and volume regulation. The inward current is mediated, at least in part, by AISC-containing Na+ channels. In addition, an inhibitor of the inward current, the PcTX1 peptide, is described. Also provided are methods for screening compounds to inhibit the inward Na+ current, methods for screening for tumors expressing the inward Na+ current and methods for treating tumors expressing the inward Na+ current.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2004Publication date: April 26, 2007Applicant: THE UAB RESEARCH FOUNDATIONInventors: Dale Benos, James Bubien, G. Patent number: 6684558Abstract: A downrigger including a downrigger line and weight supported from a motor powered reel associated with a fishing line and fishing rod with a releasable interconnection between the downrigger line and fishing line so that when the bait connected with the fishing line is taken by a fish, the fishing line will separate from the downrigger line to enable a fisherman to play and reel in the fish in a well known manner. The motor powered reel can pivot between an outboard fishing position, an idle position above a boat cover board or gunwale and an inboard position which enables the reel, motor and associated components of the downrigger to be attached to or removed from the boat. Power is supplied to the powered reel only when the downrigger is in the outboard fishing position. The powered downrigger unit includes a removable cover for the reel, motor and other drive components to prevent accidental contact with these components.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2002Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Inventor: Daniel G. Patent number: 4413678Abstract: Apparatus situated in a borehole traversing an earth formation is protected from closing of the borehole by being encased in an inflatable device. Surface equipment inflates and maintains the inflatable device at a sufficient pressure so as to prevent the earth formation from closing in and contacting the apparatus. A pressure sensor senses the maintenance pressure and provides a corresponding signal. An alarm circuit provides an alarm when the pressure decreases below the sufficient maintenance pressure level.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1981Date of Patent: November 8, 1983Assignee: Texaco Development CorporationInventor: Ronald G. Gillespie
