  • Patent number: 6058815
Abstract: A hand held power tool with a power drive train extending externally within an elongate housing from a motor disposed near one end of the housing through a handle-forming intermediate portion of the housing to a power takeoff at another end of the housing, wherein the fingers and hand of a user grasp the handle-forming portion to substantially encircle a section of the power drive train passing through the handle-forming portion. Preferably, the hand tool is adapted for use by urging the tool manually into a workpiece and an on/off switch for the tool is activatable by pressure from the palm of a user's hand urging the tool into the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 6055891
Abstract: A driver for fasteners, and particularly, a power screwdriver is described which is adapted to drive screws having different diameters. The power screwdriver has a removable guide tube and complementary drive shaft. The guide tube is sized to the diameter of one size of screw. The complementary removable drive shaft is sized to be guided in the guide shaft, reciprocally movable therein to engage and guide a screw located in the guide tube. By removal of one pair of guide tube and complementary drive shaft and replacement with another pair of guide tube and complementary drive shaft adapted for use with screws having a different head diameter, the driver is adapted for driving screws of different head diameters.

  • Patent number: 5943926
Abstract: A screwdriver assembly to drive a threaded fastener carrying a washer thereon spaced axially from a head of the fastener towards a tip of the fastener. The screwdriver assembly comprises a guideway to receive a fastener coaxially therein, a washer abutment surface disposed about the guideway to engage a washer carried on a fastener received in the guideway to assist in axially locating the fastener coaxially within the guideway and an elongate rotatable driver shaft having at a forward end a bit member. The driver shaft is reciprocally movable axially in the guideway to engage the fastener with the bit member and drive the fastener axially forwardly from the guideway into a workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5927163
Abstract: This invention provides a driver attachment for a collated screwstrip in which a slide body is slidable in a housing parallel a longitudinal axis about which drive shaft is rotatable. The slide body has a nose portion. A screw feed activation mechanism coupled between the housing and the slide body translates relative sliding movement and positioning of the slide body relative the housing. The nose portion includes a channel to guide a collated screwstrip generally transversely to the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft. The nose portion includes a guide mechanism to locate each successive screw advanced through the channel into axial alignment with the drive shaft for engagement therewith. A strip carrying screws is advanced into the guideway via an entranceway and the spent strip from which the screws have been driven exits from the guideway via an exitway which encircles the spent strip.

  • Patent number: 5918512
Abstract: An improved screwdriver in which a replacement bit is removably secured to a mandrel by the bit being axially slidable in an axial socket in the end of the mandrel. The bit is movable from a position coaxially aligned with the socket to a position out of alignment therefrom, to assist in the engagement and driving of misaligned screws. A resilient split-ring which serves to retain the bit in the socket is carried by and replaceable with the bit. With each new bit a new split-ring is also provided.

  • Patent number: 5884541
Abstract: An improved screwdriver in which a replaceable bit is removably secured in an axial socket in the end of the mandrel with a slot extending radially inwardly into the socket rearward of the bit. A separate bit removing lever tool is provided having a hook-shaped portion which curves back on itself to a distal end. The hook-shaped is insertable via the slot into the socket to assume a position with the distal end extending forwardly into the socket to engage the rear end of the bit with surfaces of the hook-shaped portion to engage both a forwardly directed engagement surface of the rear of the slot and the side walls of the socket such that pivotal movement of the tool guides and cams the distal end into the socket and into engagement with the bit to urge the bit forwardly out of the socket.

  • Patent number: 5870933
Abstract: A driver attachment for driving screws in a collated screwstrip. The attachment having a housing and a slide body slidable axially relative to the housing with the slide body carrying a shuttle slidable transversely relative the slide body. A lever is coupled at one end to the housing and at another end to the shuttle such that reciprocal movement of the housing and slide body axially reciprocally cycles the shuttle transversely. The slide body preferably carries a bearing member which when the slide body approaches a fully extended postion, engages the lever to assist the lever in drawing the shuttle inwardly to advance the screwstrip.

  • Patent number: 5855151
Abstract: A driver attachment for a collated screwstrip carrying screws in which a slide body is slidable in a housing parallel a longitudinal axis about which a drive shaft is rotatable. The slide body receives a screwstrip such that a screw feed activation mechanism coupled between the housing and the slide body advances successive screws into a position to be driven by the drive shaft with relative sliding of the slide body relative the housing between an extended and a retracted position. A latch system is provided to latch the slide body to the housing against extension towards the extended position beyond an extension limit position. With the slide body and housing latched together, the driver attachment may be used to drive or withdraw separate screws independently of the screwstrip, with or without the screwstrip engaged in the slide body.
