  • Patent number: 8488552
Abstract: The present invention relates to a UE, base station network node and methods thereof in a cellular mobile communication system. One method concerns handover from a first radio base station to a second radio base station wherein, it comprises the steps receiving a notification from the first radio base station that currently serves said UE, said notification indicating the last packet to be transmitted to this user equipment from said first radio base station on a first connection; and informing the second radio base station by a request to commence transmission from this second radio base station when the notified last packet is received at the UE.

  • Patent number: 7733782
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for avoiding unnecessary retransmissions in a packet-based radio-communication network by exchanging transmission state information between retransmission functionality entities (12, 21) located at respective protocol layers in different network nodes (1, 2), and performing inter-layer coordination of retransmissions between the network nodes (1, 2) based on the exchanged transmission state information to provide a more efficient overall scheme for retransmissions.

  • Patent number: 7496368
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for controlling frequency selection within a wireless communication system in response to radar-like interference signals. The method comprises continuously or quasi-continuously monitoring and assessing a plurality of frequencies with respect to a radar-like interference signal and allocating a quality parameter to each assessed frequency, the quality parameter indicating the probability that the frequency is occupied. The method further comprises selecting one or more frequencies in dependence on the allocated quality parameters and subsequent frequency monitoring.

  • Patent number: 7433702
Abstract: A wireless local area network (LAN) is operated so that a mobile terminal (MT) transmits various power-related information over an air interface to a power status repository (PSR) of the wireless local area network (LAN). For example, in one aspect of the invention, the mobile terminal transmits power status information, the power status information having an indication of whether the mobile terminal is currently operating using battery power or line power. The power status information is transmitted at one of the following times: (1) upon power-up of the mobile terminal; (2) upon command issued from the power status repository; (3) upon establishment of a connection between the mobile terminal and the LAN; and (4) upon a change in power status for the mobile terminal. The power status repository (PSR) can take the form of an Access Point (AP) for an intranet, or another mobile terminal in the case of an ad hoc network.

  • Patent number: 6807154
Abstract: A TDMA/TDD link adaptation method determines radio link quality at a base station. The radio link quality is used to update and broadcast a physical layer parameter indicator (10-16) from the base station on a broadcast control channel having a common physical layer parameter indicator for all uplink and downlink channels.

  • Patent number: 6778501
Abstract: In a wireline or wireless telecommunications system or data network, which employs a Selective Repeat Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) to convey data packet reception status for a sequence of data packets grouped together into a number of blocks of data packets, partial bit mapping is employed to improve efficiency, particularly with respect to bandwidth. This may be accomplished, more specifically, by including in the ARQ message that is sent from the receiver to the sender, a number of partial bitmaps, along with a corresponding number of bitmap block numbers, where a first bitmap block number identifies a particular one of the blocks of data packets and the corresponding bitmap defines the reception status of the data packets in that block. Each of the remaining bitmap block numbers identify an additional block of data packets relative to the first block of data packets. Accordingly, the remaining bitmap block numbers require fewer bits to identify their corresponding data packet blocks.

  • Patent number: 6622251
Abstract: In a WLAN where an AP and MTs use a duplex airlink having a MAC frame structure to communicate with each other, the AP places wakeup PDUs at different locations in a MAC frame to allow the MTs to conserve energy by maximizing sleep time. In other embodiments, the wakeup PDUs are sequenced by MAC-ID so that a MT can conclusively determine whether remaining wakeup PDUs in a sequence can contain its MAC-ID, and go to sleep early if they cannot. In another embodiment, a wakeup PDU type can indicate to a corresponding MT whether the MT can expect downlink data later in the same MAC frame. In addition, the wakeup PDU type can indicate to the MT that the MAC frame that it should awaken and remain awake to receive downlink data in the future.

  • Patent number: 6609012
Abstract: In a cellular, broadband radio access network, such as a High Performance Local Area Network Type 2 (HIPERLAN/2), which employs multiple antennas per base station, the process of identifying and selecting the most appropriate base station antenna to support a given mobile terminal may be accomplished more effectively by allowing the mobile terminal to initiate antenna selection and, thereafter, to identify the most appropriate one of the multiple base station antennas. By utilizing the mobile terminal in this capacity, the process of antenna selection can be accomplished more effectively even if there is relatively little uplink communication between the mobile terminal and its corresponding base station.

  • Patent number: 6363267
Abstract: In accordance with embodiments of the invention, in a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) configured in accordance with the HIPERLAN Type 2 standard where an Access Point (AP) and Mobile Terminals (MTs) use a duplex airlink having a MAC frame structure to communicate with each other, when an MT fails to properly perceive and decode a wakeup announcement in the MAC frame that is directed to it by the AP, the MT will remain awake and continue to decode and monitor subsequent MAC frames until it either receives a wakeup announcement directed to it, or until a predetermined number of MAC frames transpire. Where the MT fails to correctly decode a wakeup announcement and/or fails to send an acknowledgment signal back to the AP when the wakeup announcement includes a polling request, the AP will continue to resend the wakeup announcement and any appropriate, associated downlink data pending for the AP, in subsequent MAC frames.

  • Patent number: 6334057
Abstract: In a synchronous cellular radio telecommunications network that employs a time division multiple access (TDMA) channel allocation scheme, an effective approach to allocating channels or time slots in a TDMA time frame containing asymmetric downlink and uplink traffic channel fields can be achieved by dividing the downlink and uplink traffic channel fields into a number of regions, based on an expected level of intercell interference associated with each region. In addition, the level of susceptibility to intercell interference for each mobile unit operating in a given cell is continuously established.

  • Patent number: 6310866
Abstract: A medium access control (MAC) protocol for use in a wireless network, that efficiently supports automatic and timely frequency assignment. The MAC protocol accomplishes this by providing periodic “quiet intervals”. During these intervals, all transmissions in a corresponding broadcast region are halted, thereby enabling the base station controlling the broadcast region to measure interference over a number of potential frequency carriers. The interference measurements can then be used by an automatic frequency assignment algorithm to reassign frequencies, if necessary, to the various base stations which make up the wireless network. When a base station is reassigned a new frequency, the MAC protocol also provides a period during which the base station can tune to a newly assigned frequency, and thereafter, a period during which the wireless terminals associated with the base station synchronize themselves to the base station and the generation of MAC frames over the newly assigned frequency.

  • Patent number: 6308082
Abstract: In a digital cellular radio communication network, modulation and channel coding for a plurality of radio links of a given cell is determined in response to quality information received during network operation and indicative of communication quality associated with the plurality of radio links. A single modulation and channel coding scheme is determined in response to the quality information, and the single modulation and channel coding scheme is used in each of the links.
