Patent number: 5308586Abstract: Beads for use in beds in electrostatic separators for the separation of suspended particles from hydrocarbon oils. Electrostatic separators employing a bed of these beads have the capacity to remove as much as 99 weight percent of contaminating particles, such as catalyst fines, from various oil fractions to levels of less than 100 parts per million and even less than 5 ppm. A method and apparatus for purifying various FCC oils using these beads is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1992Date of Patent: May 3, 1994Assignee: General AtomicsInventors: G. Patent number: 5203409Abstract: A geothermal well apparatus which includes the well casing head, the expansion spool, an improved hanger spool which both supports and allows communication to a tubing string through the hanger spool and a master valve which is positioned above the hanger spool so that the presence or absence of a tubing string within the well supported from the hanger spool will not prevent the operation of the master valve. This improved hanger spool structure allows the use of the injection tubing string support and communication thereto solely by and through the hanger spool. The hanger which supports the tubing string is landed within a pocket in the flow passage of the hanger spool and the weight of the string provides the setting force for the sealing means carried by the hanger. A holddown screw is included to retain the hanger in it landed and sealed position within hanger spool.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 1992Date of Patent: April 20, 1993Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: G. Ray Seid, Joe E. Wilson, John B. Williams, Jr.

Patent number: 5057298Abstract: The invention is a process wherein SO.sub.2 is absorbed in a concentrated solution of potassium citrate and the solution is reacted with H.sub.2 S at a temperature above the melting point of sulfur to form elemental sulfur. The reaction produces a solution lean in sulfur dioxide. SO.sub.2, in the form of a rich solution or a gas, can be introduced into the lean solution in order to inhibit post-formation of sulfur. This introduction of SO.sub.2 avoids a tendency for sulfur to form continually after the solution exits the reaction zone.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1990Date of Patent: October 15, 1991Assignee: Pipco, Inc.Inventors: William G. Patent number: 4617028Abstract: The present invention comprises a method and apparatus for separating foreign objects from airflow channeled to an aircraft engine. An air intake including a foreign object separator is provided. The air intake includes an inlet duct having a bend for defining a pressure side, which inlet duct is effective for channeling airflow to the engine. A separator aperture is disposed in the pressure side of the inlet duct and a receptacle extends from the inlet duct and is in flow communication with the separator aperture. The receptacle includes a turning wall which is substantially arcuate in both a transverse plane and a longitudinal plane, and is substantially closed for preventing the flow of airflow therethrough while being effective for receiving and capturing foreign objects which enter the inlet duct and pass through the separator aperture.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1983Date of Patent: October 14, 1986Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Martin G. Patent number: 4169288Abstract: A point of sale system having an active and a spare data processing system, each including separate read/write memories, with only one of the systems being active at a given time, but with the active system being able to selectively acquire data from the read/write memory of the spare system upon start-up and including means for verifying which read/write memory of the active or the spare system contains valid, most current data which is then transferred to whichever system is the active system, the read/write memories of each of the two systems having a built-in generation number counter which is incremented by one whenever either the data of the inactive read/write memory is caused to be transferred to the active read/write memory or whenever the counts in the generation number counters of both read/write memories are equal, this change in the generation number counters taking place only at the start-up of the system.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1977Date of Patent: September 25, 1979Assignee: International Telephone and Telegraph CorporationInventors: Bruce A. Patent number: 4059498Abstract: A filter for separating finely divided solid particles that may be electrically conducting from electrically nonconducting liquids has means for directing the liquid to be filtered in a radial flow pattern through a filter bed of glass beads to which a high-voltage gradient is applied. A central tubular electrode that serves as a conduit for the liquid extends longitudinally through the filter bed within a concentric cylindrical outer electrode spaced between the central electrode and the casing wall of the filter. After filtering until the electrical current through the filter bed exceeds a predetermined maximum, the voltage gradient is discontinued and the filter backflushed by flowing liquid upwardly through the filter at a rate that expands the filter and causes movement of the beads relative to one another and to the cylindrical outer electrode to remove deposited solids from the beads and from the electrode.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1976Date of Patent: November 22, 1977Assignee: Gulf Research & Development CompanyInventors: James H. Crissman, G. Ray Fritsche, Frederick B. Hamel, Lloyd W. Hilty

Patent number: 4009089Abstract: A process for separating finely divided, electrically conductive materials from hot liquid hydrocarbons. The process is particularly valuable in the treatment of a liquid hydrocarbon feed stock for a fixed bed catalytic process such as hydrodesulfurization of gas oils or heavier petroleum fractions, or for hydrocracking. The feed stock is made to flow longitudinally through a bed of spherical glass particles between electrodes. A voltage gradient of 5 to 25 kv per inch is applied to the electrodes. Periodically the filter is cleaned by backflushing with filtered product. The backflush liquid and entrained solids are delivered into a thickener consisting of a hollow vessel having a pair of vertical electrodes between which the backflush liquid is passed downwardly. Suspended particles aggregate and rapidly settle from the liquid.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1975Date of Patent: February 22, 1977Assignee: Gulf Research & Development CompanyInventors: James H. Crissman, G. Ray Fritsche
