  • Publication number: 20150256449
Abstract: A wired communication link to carry to one side a first transmission of unidirectional time sensitive application data, having a throughput of at least 1.1 Gbps, multiplexed with a first direction of a bidirectional data channel, and to carry to the other side a second transmission of a second direction of the bidirectional data channel. The first and the second transmissions are transmitted over at least one common wire, the frequency bands of the first and the second transmissions at least partially overlap, and the communication link guarantees correct reception order. As a result, the receiver that receives the multiplexed transmission can utilize a relatively small buffer that is enough to compensate for timing distortions and is not enough to rearrange the unidirectional time sensitive application data.

  • Publication number: 20150063475
Abstract: Receivers configured to handle dynamically modulated symbols. One receiver includes a slicer, a physical coding sublayer (PCS), and a decision based filter (DBF). Each of most of the received frames comprising (i) modulation information modulated according to a predetermined modulation order, and (ii) symbols of at least two different modulation orders that are dynamically modulated in accordance with the modulation information. • Publication number: 20150063474
Abstract: Receivers designed to reduce decision based filter error propagation by feedback from PCS to slicer. One embodiment includes a slicer, a physical coding sublayer (PCS), and a decision based filter (DBF). The frames include symbols of at least two different modulation orders. The slicer has slicing functions suitable for the different modulations and feeds the PCS with the slicing results. The PCS identifies frame boundaries and modulation information, which are modulated according to a predetermined modulation order, uses the identified modulation information to determine the modulation of a nonempty set of dynamically modulated symbols in each frame, and provides the slicer with an indication of which slicer function output to use to feed the DBF.

  • Patent number: 8930795
Abstract: Reducing decision based filter error propagation by feedback from a physical coding sublayer (PCS) to a slicer. One method includes: receiving a frame comprising symbols of at least two different modulation orders that use subsets of a symbol superset; slicing the received symbols according to the highest modulation order by a slicer having slicing functions suitable for the different modulations; identifying frame boundaries and modulation information, which are modulated according to a predetermined modulation order; using the identified modulation information for determining the modulation of a nonempty set of dynamically modulated symbols in the received frame; and providing the slicer with an indication of which slicer function output to use for feeding a decision based filter.

  • Patent number: 8867603
Abstract: A configurable analog equalizer is set to a first high-pass frequency response that is intentionally too moderate to compensate for a low-pass frequency response of a physical link coupling a transmitter and a receiver. A Feed Forward Equalizer (FFE) is activated at the receiver; the FFE includes a set of coefficients having a minimum configuration of a cursor coefficient and a first pre-cursor coefficient. A Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE) is activated at the receiver; the DFE includes a set of coefficients having a minimum configuration of a first post-cursor coefficient. The configurable analog equalizer is then set to a high-pass frequency response that is more intense than the first high-pass frequency response, until the first post-cursor coefficient of the DFE substantially equals an absolute value of a quotient obtained by dividing the first pre-cursor coefficient of the FFE by the cursor coefficient of the FFE.

  • Patent number: 8665929
Abstract: Assuring acquisition of symbol timing in a full-duplex data transceiver under inter-symbol interference conditions. One embodiment includes a transmitter comprising a first local clock having a first free running frequency, and a receiver comprising a second local clock having a second frequency initially set to a value higher than the first free running frequency. A first type decision-directed timing recovery mechanism is intentionally limited to only decreasing the frequency of the second local clock. A second type decision-directed timing recovery mechanism is not limited to only decreasing the frequency. The receiver receives symbols, decrease the frequency of the second local clock to a third frequency value using the first type decision-directed timing recovery mechanism, disables the first type mechanism after reaching the third frequency, and then phase-lock the second local clock to the optimal phase under MMSE criteria using the second type decision-directed timing recovery mechanism.

  • Patent number: 8644416
Abstract: A transmitter transmits to a receiver a training sequence having symbols belonging to a single modulation scheme. At least 90% of symbols have low symbol amplitude, and at most 10% of the symbols have high symbol amplitude. A first symbol estimator estimates the symbols using substantially only the sign of the received symbols, and substantially disregarding symbol amplitudes. A timing recovery mechanism estimates the received symbols in order to continuously reduce a frequency drift between the receiver and the transmitter. The first symbol estimator is switched off and a second symbol estimator is switched on according to a certain criterion. The second symbol estimator estimates symbols belonging to the training sequence. Each of the symbols is estimated to either the low symbol amplitude or the high symbol amplitude. An equalizer uses the symbols estimated by the second symbol estimator to converge, achieve signal equalization, and eliminate inter-symbol interference.
