  • Patent number: 5296561
Abstract: A pressure-sensitive adhesive comprises a moisture-curable polymer comprising a polymer prepared by polymerization of at least one .alpha.-olefin monomer, said polymer containing hydrolyzable or condensable silyl groups and having a weight average molecular weight of at least 30,000. The pressure-sensitive adhesive can be hot-melt coated without emitting volatiles and then can adhere aggressively to both polar and nonpolar substrates. The PSA has good internal strength at high temperatures.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 24, 1993
Date of Patent: March 22, 1994
Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company
Inventors: Gaddam N. Babu, James R. Peterson, Sehyun Nam
  • Patent number: 5294668
Abstract: The invention provides pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) compositions comprising a graft copolymer of one or more of ethylene and C.sub.3 -C.sub.18 .alpha.-olefins and one or more of a new class of macromonomers. The adhesive composition comprises a blend of the graft copolymer with a tackifying resin. Sheet materials can be coated with layers of the adhesive composition to provide tapes and laminates.

  • Patent number: 5278244
Abstract: A new class of macromolecular monomers (hereinafter called "macromonomers") comprises the polymerized product of at least one of an ethenylarene and a conjugated diene monomer, the product having a terminal omega-alkenyl group of at least four carbon atoms. The novel macromonomer can be copolymerized with ethylene and alpha-olefin monomers to form graft copolymers having pendant side-chains. The graft copolymers are useful as coating and molding compositions. The macromonomers can be useful as coatings on chromatographic supports for analytical and preparative separation of chemical mixtures.

  • Patent number: 5266399
Abstract: A pressure-sensitive adhesive that can adhere aggressively to both polar and nonpolar substrates and has good internal strength at high temperatures is provided by heat or radiation curing a blend of an ethylenically-unsaturated .alpha.-olefin polymer, a crosslinker having at least 2 hydrosilyl groups, and a hydrosilation catalyst. A preferred hydrosilane crosslinker has the formula ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, and n' is a number in the range of 2 to 35.

  • Patent number: 5209971
Abstract: Pressure sensitive adhesive compositions comprise one or more poly(alpha-olefin) homopolymers, copolymers, terpolymers, and tetrapolymers derived from monomers containing 6 to 10 carbon atoms and photoactive crosslinking agents wherein radiation curing provides adhesive films having a superior balance of peel and shear adhesive properties and the pressure sensitive adhesive is useful in pressure sensitive adhesive tapes, in articles containing transfer adhesive films, and as the bonding material between supports in a laminated structure.

  • Patent number: 5202361
Abstract: Radiation-curable, tackifier-free compositions are provided which contain: (i) a blend of certain acrylate esters and monoethylenically-unsaturated copolymerizable monomers; (ii) certain .alpha.-olefin polymers; and (iii) a photoinitiator and optionally, a crosslinker. Pressure-sensitive adhesives having good adhesion to both low and high energy surfaces as well as possessing excellent low and high temperature performance properties are prepared by exposing the radiation-curable compositions to light having a wavelength in the range of from about 280 to 400 nm.
