  • Publication number: 20130066195
Abstract: A subcutaneous cavity marking device percutaneously implantable in breast tissue during a biopsy procedure. The marking device including at least two implantable bodies, one made from a first material and another made from a second material wherein the first and second materials are different materials and the at least two implantable bodies are adapted to be inserted into a subcutaneous cavity created by removal of tissue. The at least two implantable bodies are detectable via non-invasive techniques as tissue cavity markers and at least one of the at least two detectable bodies is an electronic chip connected to the other of the at least two implantable bodies.

  • Patent number: 8323171
Abstract: Apparatus, systems and methods are provided for delivering brachytherapy to a target tissue region of a human or other mammalian body. In some embodiments, a flexible brachytherapy device is implanted that includes a therapy delivery portion having one or more radioactive sources securely retained thereto, and a tail portion extending from the therapy delivery portion. Once implanted, the tail portion may extend outside the body, where it may be folded and secured flat against the skin. The device may be removed at therapy completion. Other embodiments of the invention are directed to systems and methods for delivering brachytherapy devices to the body.

  • Publication number: 20110257459
Abstract: Described here are brachytherapy applicators that comprise a modular support matrix. The modular support matrix may define the arrangement of radiation source lumens within the brachytherapy applicator. The modular support matrix can be adjusted to position the radiation sources to obtain a certain dose and dose profile. A series of modular support matrices may be operably connected according to patient anatomy or dosing requirements. Systems and methods for using such modular brachytherapy applicators are also described.

  • Publication number: 20110137103
Abstract: Apparatus for delivering brachytherapy to a target tissue region includes an elongate body including a proximal end, a distal end sized for introduction into a tissue tract and carrying a plurality of elongate members including pathways for receiving a source of radiation. The elongate members are movable between collapsed and expanded configurations. During use, a tract is created through tissue, and the elongate body carrying the elongate members is advanced through the tract into a target location with the elongate members in the collapsed configuration. The elongate members are directed to the expanded configuration at the target location, and radiation is delivered to treat tissue at the target location, e.g., by introducing one or more radiation sources along the pathways.

  • Patent number: 7887476
Abstract: Apparatus, systems, and methods are provided for delivering brachytherapy into a target tissue region, e.g., a breast. In some embodiments, a flexible brachytherapy device is implanted that includes a therapy delivery portion having one or more radioactive sources securely retained thereto, and a tail portion extending from the therapy delivery portion. The brachytherapy device may be implanted in a helical configuration within the target tissue region. To assist in placement and removal of the brachytherapy device, a tubular sheath may be implanted by attaching (e.g., sliding over) a helically coiled needle that is advanced into the body by screw-like rotation. Once implanted, the sheath and the brachytherapy device may extend outside the body, where they may be folded and secured flat against the skin. The device and sheath may be removed at therapy completion.

  • Publication number: 20110004094
Abstract: An implantable device has a body that is substantially rigid and has an imageable shape. The body is further bioabsorbable and may contain permanent metallic elements to aid in its imaging. When the device is implanted in a resected cavity in soft tissue, it can cause the cavity to conform substantially to a known imageable shape. The implantable device is further imageable due to its attenuation properties being different from those of soft tissue such that the boundaries of the tissue corresponding to the predetermined shape can be determined.

  • Publication number: 20100234726
Abstract: Cavity and sentinel lymph node marking 412 devices, marker delivery devices, and methods are disclosed. More particularly, upon insertion into a body, the cavity marking device and method enable one to determine the center, orientation, and periphery of the cavity by radiographic, mammography, echogenic, or other noninvasive imaging techniques. A composition and method are disclosed for locating the sentinel lymph node in a mammalian body to determine if cancerous cells have spread thereto. The composition is preferably a fluid composition consisting of a carrier fluid and some type of contrast agent; alternatively, the contrast agent may itself be a fluid and therefore not need a separate carrier fluid. This composition is capable of (1) deposition in or around a lesion and migration to and accumulation in the associated sentinel node, and (2) remote detection via any number of noninvasive techniques.

  • Patent number: 7505555
Abstract: A compression device includes a frame mountable to a mammography unit that includes a window disposed within an x-ray field of the mammography unit when the frame is mounted to the mammography unit, and a radiolucent compressible member connectable to the frame across the window for providing a compression surface within the x-ray field. For example, the compressible member may include a rigid backing member and a radiolucent pad, e.g., a gel pad, on the backing member. The backing member and frame may include tongue and groove or other connectors for connecting the compressible member to the frame. Optionally, one or more thin, radiolucent films may be removable from the compressible member, e.g., after obtaining x-rays from successive individual patients.
