  • Patent number: 8353298
Abstract: A smoking article having a cylinder of smoking material and a filter system attached to the cylinder of smoking material. The filter system includes an upstream plug of filtering material, a downstream plug of filtering material, and a cavity between the upstream plug of filtering material and the downstream plug of filtering material. A flow restrictor is positioned within the cavity and has at least one orifice and a series of perforations provide ventilation to the smoking article.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: January 15, 2013
    Assignee: Philip Morris USA Inc.
Inventors: Michael Braunshteyn, Rowland W. Dwyer, San Li, Raquel Olegario, Gail Yoss
  • Patent number: 8240315
Abstract: A smoking article, which provides lower amounts of total particulate matter in a latter portion of its puff count, includes a cylinder of smoking material, a combustible hollow tube within the cylinder of smoking material, and a heat sink at a downstream end of the hollow tube. The smoking article also includes a filter system attached to the cylinder of smoking material having a sorbent material and at least one downstream segment of filtering material.

  • Publication number: 20070074734
Abstract: A smokeless lighter includes a heater sized to accommodate a smokable article such as a cigarette such that a portion of the cigarette protrudes from the lighter. The heater maintains the temperature in an internal chamber in the range of 160 to 200° C. so as to be below the ignition temperature for tobacco. An insulating jacket surrounds the heater to protect the smokers from burn injury. Circuitry may be activated manually or by insertion of a cigarette into the heater and limits operation of the heater preferably to a period of 10 to 12 minutes. Optionally, a light may be used to indicate when air is drawn through the smokeless lighter.
