    Abstract: The present invention provides a nonwoven web or laminate having at least one surface with abrasion resistance and a low degree of free fibers on the surface. Also provided is a lofty nonwoven web laminate from multicomponent fibers having at least one surface with improved abrasion resistance and reduced fuzziness over other multicomponent fiber nonwoven webs. This nonwoven webs and laminate can be used where nonwoven webs and laminates are currently used, but are particularly suitable as a filter media. Also described is a method for producing a nonwoven web having at least one abrasion resistant surface. The process includes using a liner material between the forming surface and the forming nonwoven web, wherein the liner is removed after the nonwoven web is bonded. Removing the liner exposes the abrasion resistant surface of the nonwoven web or laminate.

    Abstract: There is provided and fibrous layer for personal care products wherein the fibrous layer is made from micro-fine fibers deposited as an aqueous slurry onto a nonwoven web, and subsequently dried. The micro-fine fibers have a diameter from a positive amount to 0.5 microns. The nonwoven web may be produced from a number of methods, such as meltblowing, spunbonding, coforming, bonding and carding, and airlaying. The micro-fine fiber layer can be used to adjust the permeability of the nonwoven web, thus providing a method of controlling the rate of fluid movement through a personal care product, like diapers, training pants, incontinence garments and feminine hygiene products.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a filter medium having at least a first layer containing a stabilized matrix of thermoplastic filaments and at least one secondary material; and a second layer having a stabilized matrix of thermoplastic filaments and optionally of at least one secondary material. Each of the layer of the filter medium has a different compositional ratio of the components to result in a gradient structure. The compositional gradient for the layers of the coform results in a filter having improved capacity, which extends the life of the filter medium, as compared to a filter without the compositional gradient. The present invention also provides a method of removing particles from a fluid containing particles. The method of the present invention includes contacting the fluid containing particles with the filter medium of having the two layers described above in a manner such that the fluid containing particles is passed through the first layer of the filter medium before the second layer.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a composite which is capable of use as a filter medium and a method for producing the same. The composite may include pulp fibers and conjugate glass fibers. The conjugate fibers are desirably composed of at least two glasses which have different thermal expansion properties. The difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the multicomponent fiber produces a fiber with a random helical crimp. The random helical crimp of the conjugate fibers reduces the packing efficiency of the glass itself and the other fibers. The reduced packing efficiency affords the opportunity to prepare pulp/conjugate glass fiber composite materials with higher porosity and higher permeability for a given basis weight. The addition of the polyester staple fibers to the composite lends sufficient stiffness to the web so as to allow pleating without further treatment such as with a binder material.

    Abstract: A loop material suitable for use with a hook-and-loop fastening system, wherein the loop material includes a first fibrous nonwoven web having a first surface and a second surface and includes carded sheath-core bicomponent staple fibers in which the fibers have a sheath-core melting point differential of at least about 20.degree. C. and a length of from about 10 mm to about 65 mm. The first fibrous nonwoven web has a thickness of at least about 0.15 mm and a basis weight of at least about 20 grams per square meter; a pattern on the first surface thereof of continuous bonded areas defining a plurality of discrete unbonded areas formed by the application of heat and pressure, wherein individual fibers within the discrete unbonded areas have at least a portion thereof extending into and bonded within the continuous bonded areas; and a percent bonded area of from about 20 to about 50 percent. If desired, a film layer may be bonded to the second surface of the first fibrous nonwoven web.

    Abstract: A loop material suitable for use in a hook-and-loop fastening system, which loop material includes a bonded carded web having a first side and a second side. The bonded carded web has a basis weight of from about 15 to about 140 grams per square meter and a thickness of from about 1 mm to about 15 mm. The bonded carded web may be thermally pattern bonded. The bonded carded web is composed of fibers having a denier per filament greater than 2, with from 100 to 0 percent by weight of the fibers being thermoplastic polymer fibers and from 0 to 100 percent by weight of the fibers being bicomponent thermoplastic polymer fibers. The first component of the bicomponent fibers has a melting point which is at least about 50.degree. C. lower than the melting point of the second component. The bonded carded web has a plurality of interfiber bonds.
