  • Patent number: 8159942
Abstract: The application discloses a system and a method of selecting a profile of a digital subscriber line. In a particular embodiment, the method includes setting a threshold for voice quality and determining a number of acceptable code violations that can occur without compromising the voice quality of the digital subscriber line. When the actual number of code violations exceeds the determined number of code violations an alternate profile is selected for the DSL line.

  • Publication number: 20060159026
Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing the quality of a communication link is provided. A performance of a communication line (i.e. digital subscriber line), being affected by code violations, typically impulse noise, is estimated. An application characteristic for the communication line is then imputed from Layer 2 and Layer 3 network levels attributes, such as upstream/downstream percentages, IP port usage, ATM cell count. A correlation is made between the performance and the application, and a decision model then applies a maintenance profile the communication line based on the performance and the application. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for managing a quality of service experienced by a user when running an application over a communication link. A performance for the communication link is estimated and an application characteristic for the communication link is imputed from data gathered regarding the communication link performance.
