Patent number: 7388726Abstract: A disk drive includes a slider assembly and a controller that directs current to the slider assembly to dynamically adjust the head-to-disk spacing. In one embodiment, the slider assembly includes a write element having a first end, a second end and an intermediate section, a conductor that is connected to the intermediate section. In this embodiment, the controller directs electrical current through the conductor to heat the write element without writing data to a storage disk. The electrical current can be directed through the conductor at any time prior to data transfer or during data transfer. Heating the write element causes a deformation of the slider assembly to decrease the head-to-disk spacing. In another embodiment, the slider assembly includes a separate slider deformer. Electrical current is selectively directed to the slider deformer to cause a deformation of the slider assembly to obtain a desired head-to-disk spacing.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2006Date of Patent: June 17, 2008Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Robert McKenzie, Thao Nguyen, Xiaokun Chew, Gang Herbert Lin, Jack Tsai, Bruce Schardt, Steven Marshall

Patent number: 6808783Abstract: The present invention is directed to a writable or recordable disk that has radially varying recording properties. In one configuration, the magnetic moment, magnetic remanence, and/or information layer thickness decreases from the disk inner diameter to the disk outer diameter. In one configuration, the writing property or coercivity of the disk decreases from the disk inner diameter to the disk outer diameter. The variation in writing property may be accomplished by varying the thickness of an underlayer to the information layer.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2002Date of Patent: October 26, 2004Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Gang Herbert Lin, Thao Nguyen

Patent number: 6452735Abstract: A disk drive that monitors changes in flying height is disclosed. In one embodiment, the disk drive includes a disk for storing information and an air bearing slider with a transducer that includes a write element for writing information to the disk during a write operation and a magneto-resistive (MR) read element for reading information from the disk during a read operation. The MR read element generates a readback signal during the write operation that includes a thermally induced signal caused by thermal changes in the MR read element and a magnetically induced signal caused by magnetic flux applied by the write element to the MR read element. The thermally induced signal has a relatively low frequency content and the magnetically induced signal has a relatively high frequency content.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1999Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Curtis Egan, Gang Herbert Lin

Patent number: 6172832Abstract: A magnetic storage system capable of separating thermal signals from data signals is disclosed. The magnetic storage system includes a magnetic media and a head associated with the magnetic media. The head includes a magneto-resistive element which is biased by a modulated bias current. The modulated bias current modulates thermal signals to a first frequency and modulates data signals to at least a second frequency. A method of separating thermal signals from data signals read from a magnetic storage media is also disclosed. The method includes the steps of (1) providing a head for reading information from the magnetic storage media, the head having an MR element; and, (2) biasing the MR element with a modulated bias current.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1999Date of Patent: January 9, 2001Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Moris M. Dovek, Gang Herbert Lin, Erhard T. Schreck

Patent number: 6157510Abstract: A magnetic storage device is disclosed. The magnetic storage device contains a magnetic media. Previously recorded information resides on tracks in the magnetic media. A transducer is used to read information from the magnetic media. The transducer includes a first read element and a second read element. The first and second read elements are both laterally and longitudinally offset from each other. A method of reading information stored on a track of a magnetic media is also disclosed. Information is read from the magnetic media using the first and second read elements to produce respective first and second analog read signals. The first and second analog read signals are an electrical representation of the information previously recorded on the track.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1998Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Erhard T.
