  • Patent number: 5500494
Abstract: Apparatus for use in combination with a compressed air powered tool having an air exit port to modify the sound of the tool during operation. The apparatus includes a helical coil compression spring having a plenum and defining restricted, radially disposed flow paths communicating with the plenum. A spring support holds the spring in position on the tool and air passing from the air exit port of the tool enters the spring plenum and passes through the restricted, radially disposed flow paths. An adjustment mechanism moves the coil spring segments, varies the length of the spring, and varies the size of the restricted, radially disposed flow paths. The spring support prevents bending of the spring.
