Abstract: A technique is disclosed for managing a workload distributed across multiple data processing systems to enhance shared resource access to meet a common performance standard. The technique includes on at least one system, measuring performance of the work units on the system to create local performance data, and on at least some of the systems sending the local performance data to at least one other system of the multiple data processing systems. The method further includes on at least one of the systems, receiving the performance data from the sending systems to create remote performance data, and adjusting at least one control parameter for accessing shared resources in response to the local and remote performance data to modify the performance of the work units distributed across the data processing systems to achieve the common performance standard. A dynamic resource clustering process is also employed to enhance the shared resource management.

Abstract: A computer system includes a plurality of memory modules that contain semiconductor memory, such as DIMMs. The system includes a host/data controller that utilizes an XOR engine to store data and parity information in a striped fashion on the plurality of memory modules to create a redundant array of industry standard DIMMs (RAID). The system supports DIMMs having X4 and X8 configurations. The system also transitions between various states, including a redundant state and a non-redundant state, to facilitate “hot-plug” capabilities utilizing its removable memory cartridges.

Abstract: An electronic security system for a parking meter includes a vault door having a spring-biased contact terminal for making breakable electrical contact with a housing hinge bracket contact terminal mounted in a vault opening. An electronic lock control circuit is able to communicate with a meter control (coin counting/auditing) circuit in the meter portion of the system through the vault door/housing hinge bracket contact terminals, thus eliminating a direct cable connection between the lock circuit and the meter circuit. The spring-biased contact may be substituted by equivalent breakable electrical contacts such as optocoupler contacts.

The dispenser includes a support plate that is adapted to support the flexible viscous liquid containing bag. A squeegee carriage having a squeegee attached thereto is also provided. The squeegee carriage is mounted for movement from an initial, upper position downwardly along the support plate to a lower position. The squeegee is adapted to press the flexible viscous liquid containing bag against the support plate to squeeze the viscous liquid from the dispensing opening. A flexible bag for use with the dispenser is also provided.

Signals are received over the shared spectrum. The received signals are sampled. The samples are delayed to produce a window. The window has evenly time spaced samples. Each window sample is despread with a pilot code. A weight for each despread pilot code window sample is determined using an adaptive algorithm. Each window sample is despread with a traffic code. Each despread traffic code window sample is weighted with a corresponding weight of the determined weights. The despread traffic code window sample are combined as data of the traffic signal.

Abstract: Homing bone marrow cells deposited at ATTC CRL-12424 can be transfected with a toxic gene which expresses a compound which alone, or in the company of a triggering agent, kills neighboring cancer cells in the bone marrow of a patient receiving the therapy. Toxic genes include cytotoxin such as thymidine kinase, immune stimulating compounds such as interleuken-2 and radiation repair inhibitors, such as Ku protein. The transfected cells can be administered directly to the site of the tumor or systemically, or regionally, intramedullary (into the marrow) through intravascular administration. The latter alternative permits the delivery of very high doses of the effective agent.

The scraper is preferably a single piece of plastic having an elongate handle portion which is held in hand generally parallel to the carpet and which handle curves downwardly ending in a working portion having a textured surface disposed generally parallel to the carpet. The textured surface preferably includes a plurality of transverse, forward-tipped teeth such that after application of the solvent to the gum, grease, paint, or wax, the scraper is moved in a forward, vertical, semi-circular motion such that the teeth engage the gum, grease, paint, or wax in a single direction parallel to the carpet and then lifted therefrom and moved backwards for a repeat stroke. The teeth act to agitate and work the gel into the gum, grease, paint, or wax, producing small waves of loosened material.

Abstract: A memory cache system is used in a multiprocessor environment. The first processor accesses data using a first level 1 cache, and the second processor accesses data using a second level 1 cache. A storage control circuit is positioned between the first and second level 1 caches and a level 2 cache and main memory. The level 2 cache maintains copies of data in main storage and further maintains an indication of those level 1 caches having copies of data and whether those copies have been modified. When a processor accesses data that is not resident in the connected level 1 cache, a request is delivered to the level 2 cache for this data. The level 2 cache then determines whether it can return a copy of the data to the level 1 cache or must access the data from main memory.

Abstract: A mini-bend optical arrangement and an associated method are described. This arrangement is designed to change the directional orientation of a light path using optical fiber. A first and a second fiber optic member define first and second light paths, respectively, which first and second members include a numerical aperture and which introduce substantial bend losses upon being bent at less than a predetermined bend radius. The first and second fiber optic members are arranged along the first and second paths preferably bent by less than the predetermined bend radius.

Abstract: A scanning-aperture electron microscope system and method in which a radiation source generates a radiation beam that is incident upon a surface of a sample material causing electrons to be ejected from the surface. When magnetic imaging is being performed, a polarization rotator polarization-modulates the radiation beam. A scanning-aperture probe having an aperture is positioned in proxiity to the surface of the sample material so that photoelectrons ejected from the surface of the sample material pass through the aperture. A detector detects the electrons passing through the aperture. The electron detector outputs a signal in response to the detected electrons that is used for imaging magnetic and/or spectroscopic features of the surface of the sample material. The resolution of the imaged features is about equal to a size of the aperture.

Abstract: Isolated nucleic acid molecules encoding human MEKK proteins, and isolated MEKK proteins, are provided. The invention further provides antisense nucleic acid molecules, recombinant expression vectors containing a nucleic acid molecule of the invention, host cells into which the expression vectors have been introduced and nonhuman transgenic animals carrying a human MEKK transgene. The invention further provides human MEKK fusion proteins and anti-human MEKK antibodies. Methods of using the human MEKK proteins and nucleic acid molecules of the invention are also disclosed, including methods for detecting human MEKK activity in a biological sample, methods of modulating human MEKK activity in a cell, and methods for identifying agents that modulate the activity of human MEKK.
