  • Publication number: 20010038834
Abstract: Homing bone marrow cells deposited at ATTC CRL-12424 can be transfected with a toxic gene which expresses a compound which alone, or in the company of a triggering agent, kills neighboring cancer cells in the bone marrow of a patient receiving the therapy. Toxic genes include cytotoxin such as thymidine kinase, immune stimulating compounds such as interleuken-2 and radiation repair inhibitors, such as Ku protein. The transfected cells can be administered directly to the site of the tumor or systemically, or regionally, intramedullary (into the marrow) through intravascular administration. The latter alternative permits the delivery of very high doses of the effective agent.
    Type: Application
    Filed: June 24, 1998
    Publication date: November 8, 2001

  • Patent number: 6082364
Abstract: Pluripotent stem-like cells obtained from bone marrow differentiate into osteocytes, chondrocytes and adipocytes, depending on the environment encountered and treatment. If systemically administered, the cells "home", that is migrate, to bone marrow. The cells may be transformed with recombinant DNA for the expression of both reporter genes, and biological factors, such as growth factors. The cells may be systemically administered to treat osteoporosis, osteolysis, improve bone implant adherence, augment bone growth or bone repair, augment cartilage repair, augment fat production for, e.g., breast augmentation, and the like.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4902296
Abstract: A grafting material comprising milled bone which has an initial coating of guanidine-extracted bone proteins which are dialyzed from solution. Unbound bone proteins are removed and this augmented milled bone is lyophized. A subsequent coat of anti-coagulated plasma containing plasma proteins is applied to the augmented milled bone. The unbound plasma proteins are removed from the coating by rinsing.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 29, 1987
Date of Patent: February 20, 1990
Assignee: The University of Virginia Alumni Patents Foundation
Inventors: Mark E. Bolander, Gary Balian
  • Patent number: 4743259
Abstract: A process of grafting material from milled bone is disclosed which comprises augmenting the bone protein of a first quantity of milled bone by dialyzing from solution guanidine-extracted bone proteins from a second quantity of milled bone and adding the extracted proteins to the first quantity of milled bone. Next, unbound proteins are removed and then the augmented milled bone is lypohilized, after which the augmented milled bone is coated with anti-coagulated plasma containing plasma proteins. Any unbound plasma protein is removed from the coating by rinsing.
