  • Patent number: 8743689
Abstract: In order to ameliorate the overload at an overloaded network node that is discarding some of the SMSs it is receiving, when a node is overloaded with received SMSs, it sends a message to the nodes from which it is receiving SMSs of that fact and includes a parameter indicating the extent to which it is overloaded. That parameter, for instance, may be the percentage of SMSs that it is receiving that are being discarded. With this information, the sending node can determine a percentage of the pending SMSs during such conditions that will help remove the overloaded node from the overload condition more quickly. Furthermore, the network protocol may be adapted to include a priority parameter in SMSs. Then, when an SMS sending node knows that a node to which it is sending SMSs is overloaded, the sending node may decide which SMSs to send to the overloaded node based on such priority information.

  • Patent number: 6600920
Abstract: A system for delivering a call to a mobile unit in a wireless network includes a mobile switching center that receives a call setup request message initiated in response to a request from an originating mobile switching center. The receiving mobile switching center initiates setting up the call between the receiving mobile switching center and the mobile unit before the call is setup between the receiving mobile switching center and the originating mobile switching center. Preferably, the receiving mobile switching center initiates setting up the call by issuing a page in response to receiving the call setup message.

  • Patent number: 6393285
Abstract: A method of and system for dynamically managing the registration and paging mobile units in a wireless system monitors a usage pattern for each mobile unit in the wireless system. Based upon the monitored usage pattern, the system sets a registration plan and a paging area plan for each mobile unit.

  • Patent number: 6256503
Abstract: A method and system in a wireless communications network are provided for restricting communication transactions based on the geographic location of originators and terminators within the wireless communications network. First, a communications transaction is initiated. In response to an initiation of the communications transaction, a geographic location of an originator of the communications transaction is determined. In response to determining the geographic location of the originator, a geographic location of a terminator of the communications transaction is determined. The geographic location of the originator is thereafter automatically compared to the geographic location of the terminator. The communications transaction is completed based upon a selected proximity of the geographic location of the originator to the geographic location of the terminator.

  • Patent number: 6151505
Abstract: A system and method of providing a terminator telecommunications unit with the geographic location of a mobile telecommunications unit, where the terminator unit may then provide directions to the mobile unit in voice format or non-voice data format so the mobile unit can use the directions to arrive at the location of the terminator unit.

  • Patent number: 6091957
Abstract: A system and method is described herein which provides an originating telecommunications unit with the geographic location of a mobile telecommunications unit without actually placing a call to, or receiving a call from, the mobile unit. The originating unit provides a service platform with an authorization code and the telephone number, or other identification, of the mobile unit to be located. The service platform then initiates a location program which uses various geographic location methods to provide the originating unit with the location of the mobile unit, without the user of the mobile unit becoming aware that the location of the mobile unit is being determined.

  • Patent number: 5995823
Abstract: A method and system in a wireless communications network for restricting certain communication transactions to specific geographic areas in order to reduce the risk of communications fraud are presented. Initially, a list of communication transactions is stored such that the list includes communication transactions permitted to occur at each of a number of geographic locations. Thereafter, a communications transaction is initiated. In response to an initiation of the communications transaction, a geographic location of an originator of the communications transaction is determined. Next, the list of communication transactions is automatically scanned for communication transactions permitted to occur at the geographic location. If the communications transaction is not found among the list, the initiation of the communications transaction is thereafter terminated. Alternatively, if the communications transaction is found among the list, the communications transaction is thereafter permitted to continue.
