  • Patent number: 8854936
Abstract: Embodiments of optical disc drives are described that perform automatic forward sense calibration of write laser power using a sample and hold sampling strategy that is automatically determined based on an automatically selected write strategy. Embodiments of the described optical disc drive may be dynamically configured to support any optical disc media, any write mode, and any write strategy. The write strategies supported may include dynamically changing write speeds and/or write power levels across the respective optical media tracks. As the optical drive is automatically configured for a selected write media/write mode/write strategy, the sample and hold sampling delays used to control the sampling of a forward sense feedback signal are also automatically configured, thereby allowing each forward sense sampling point to be aligned with an area of the forward sense feedback signal that corresponds to a power level of interest and that avoids distortion in the feedback signal.

  • Patent number: 8395977
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide a method for power calibration. The method includes writing, using a power configuration, a second pattern over a first pattern on a rewritable storage medium. The first pattern includes at least a first symbol and a second symbol while the second pattern does not include the second symbol. Thus, the second symbol in the first pattern is erased according to the power configuration. Then, the method includes reading the rewritable storage medium to measure remaining amplitude of the second symbol in the first pattern.

  • Patent number: 7215616
Abstract: Because of the reduced track pitch of DVD compared to that of CD, the running-OPC procedures (ROPC) currently used in CD-RW systems do not function well in recordable and rewritable DVD systems. The present invention proposes to use the reflected signal from the writing spot itself instead of the satellite spots used in the CD-RW running-OPC procedure. This is realized by sampling the RF-signal reflected from the writing spot at the high-reflective crystalline level. This sampled signal (?) is fed into a power control loop (a so-called ?-loop) to keep it at a constant level.
