  • Patent number: 8369672
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate to a single-polarization fiber that may include a W-type refractive-index profile having a depressed region along an unguided principal axis of the fiber, and a quasi step-index profile along a guided principal axis of the fiber. The quasi step-index profile may have a depressed region with a radial extent at least twice that of the depressed region along the unguided axis.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 27, 2010
Date of Patent: February 5, 2013
    Assignee: Verrillon, Inc.
Inventors: William Jacobsen, Jeffrey Mayfield, Paula Fournier, David Bolte, Hussein Elmaola, Chih-Hao Wang, Gary Drenzek, Abdelouahed Soufiane

  • Patent number: 7978946
Abstract: An optical fiber includes a glass fiber having a glass core and a cladding which contains voids spaced apart from the core. The voids act as trapping sites for ingressing molecules from the surrounding environment, thereby reducing the effect of such molecules on the fiber's light-transmission properties.
    Type: Grant

  • Publication number: 20050238309
Abstract: An optical fiber includes a glass fiber having a glass core and a cladding, and a hermetic layer having a high thermal stability disposed on the cladding. The glass core contains not more than about 1 mole % phosphorous. The optical fiber is adapted to operate under harsh conditions, such as elevated temperatures and/or hydrogen-containing environments. Methods for producing optical fibers, as well as methods for transmitting radiation in harsh environments using the optical fibers, are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20050135763
Abstract: A mechanically strippable optical fiber includes a layer of low-adhesion material disposed between a glass fiber and a polymeric outer coating of high thermal stability. The layer low-adhesion material renders the coating amenable to mechanical stripping without damaging the glass fiber. Methods for producing mechanically strippable optical fibers with thermally stable outer coatings are also provided.
