  • Patent number: 9364243
Abstract: An angular adjustment mechanism for a surgical instrument is described. The mechanism comprises an adjustment member (102) configured for rotation about a longitudinal axis (122), the adjustment member comprising a plurality of pairs of facets (134) arranged about the longitudinal axis. Each of the plurality of pairs of facets defines a respective angled axis (148B,148C) at an angle (150B,150C) relative to the longitudinal axis. A pivoting member (104) is arranged to pivot about a pivot axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and comprises a recess (128) for receiving the adjustment member and engaging one pair of the plurality of pairs of facets. This provides an angular adjustment mechanism in which facets on the outside of the adjustment member engage corresponding surfaces in a recess on a pivoting member. The use of facets provides a secure connection while allowing a greater degree of angular adjustment and providing a further benefit of simple operation.

  • Patent number: 9119635
Abstract: A surgical cutting guide (8) is described which comprises a body section delimiting a recess (14) extending into the body section from an external surface. The recess has a central axis and is for receiving an attachment protrusion (18) from a surgical alignment guide (6). The recess comprises: a first portion (36) having a first constant cross section along the central axis; and a second portion (38) having a second constant cross section along the central axis which is larger than the first constant cross section. The first and second portions are coaxial with the central axis and the second portion is closer to the external surface than the first portion. This configuration creates a stepped surface in the recess which is engaged by corresponding features on a protrusion of a surgical alignment guide.

  • Patent number: 8801518
Abstract: Provided in embodiments of the present invention is a method of wagering on a plurality of events. In one embodiment, the method includes accepting a plurality of participants to wager on the events and providing each participant with a fantasy bankroll of money to wager on the events. After the participants have been provided with their respective fantasy bankrolls, wagers from the participants on a first event are received. After the event has been completed, a finishing order of the participants is determined. Next, a portion of the participants is cut based on the finishing order to form a group of finalists. The finalist wager on a second event and a finishing order of the finalists is determined from the outcome of the second event. Prizes are then awarded based on the finishing order of the finalists.

  • Publication number: 20130317501
Abstract: A surgical instrument system is described which comprises an alignment guide (6,100) comprising a body section having a through bore (50) defining a longitudinal axis (122); and a rod (40) comprising a cylindrical member (2) for insertion into the through bore; and a restraining system (46, 52, 48, 94) for preventing relative movement of the alignment guide and rod along the longitudinal axis, when the cylindrical member is inserted into the through bore, and the alignment guide is located towards the proximal end of the rod. The restraining system may comprise a resilient element (46) and a recess (52) configured to engage the resilient element. In a preferred embodiment, a resilient member is disposed on the surface of the rod. Such a system allows the alignment guide to be restrained towards the proximal end of the rod so that the rod can be inserted to a patient using one hand, rather than requiring two hands (one to secure the alignment guide relative to the rod and one to insert the rod).

  • Publication number: 20120316569
Abstract: An instrument for positioning a cup component of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis includes a shaft, a housing attached to the distal end of the shaft, at least two flange portions carried on the shaft on which the cup component can be fixed, and a unitary spring element disposed about the shaft axis and disposed between the at least two flange portions and the axis of the shaft. The housing includes a base plate and extends from the shaft transversely relative to the shaft axis. The at least two flange portions can move relative to the base plate in a direction transverse to the shaft axis between an in-use position, where at least a portion of each of the at least two flange portions contacts the inner surface of the cup component, and a retracted position where the at least a portion of each of the at least two flange portions is moved towards the shaft axis so as to allow the cup component to be released from the instrument.
