  • Patent number: 9193446
Abstract: A bogie beam sensor may include a bracket and a target arm pivotably coupled to the bracket. The bracket may be coupled to a bogie beam. A sensor may be coupled to the bracket, and a target may be coupled to the target arm. A drive link may be coupled to the target arm and a piston. In response to the bogie beam pivoting with respect to the piston, the drive link may cause the target arm to rotate with respect to the bogie beam. The sensor may detect movement of the target on the target arm, and an angular position of the bogie beam may be determined based on the position of the target.

  • Patent number: 8771450
Abstract: A method of forming a composite body using a mould and an automated fiber placement machine comprising a fiber placement head, the method including moving the fiber placement head past the mould and depositing on the mould a plurality of fiber tows, the fiber tows being deposited side by side in a direction perpendicular to the movement of the fiber placement head and perpendicular to the direction of a normal of a surface of the mould where the fiber tows are deposited, thus forming a ply with a plurality of fiber tows placed side by side on the mould, wherein the fiber tows in the ply comprise first and second fiber tows having respective first and second fiber materials that are different from each other.

  • Publication number: 20120186743
Abstract: A composite layup method is described in which strips of fibrous material are deposited progressively on a mould surface. The method involves feeding a strip of fibrous material to a placement device for placing the strip progressively on the mould surface, and imparting a shape to the strip upstream of the placement device. In this way, shape is imparted to the strip prior to the strip reaching the placement device. The shape imparted to the strip corresponds at least partially to a shape of the mould surface. This prevents or reduces air from becoming trapped between the strip and the mould surface as the strip is deposited in the mould. An end effector assembly suitable for use in the composite layup method is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20050001015
Abstract: A method is provided for assembling a shaft having a metal matrix composite mid shaft and monolithic high strength alloy forward and aft shafts. The forward and aft shafts are each inertia friction welded to separate annular transition pieces which include a barrier layer operative to prevent the formation of intermetallic compounds. Special tooling is used to avoid applying shear stresses to the transition piece during welding. The welded forward and aft subassemblies are subsequently heat treated before inertia friction welding them to the mid shaft.
